Softball splits DH at rival Marietta

The Muskingum softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at rival Marietta on Monday. The Pioneers won the opener 7-2 and the Muskies claimed the nightcap, 6-2.

In the first game, Marietta scored five runs on one hit in the bottom of the sixth to seal the win. The Pioneers took advantage of a pair of walks and a pair of hit batters to aid the five-run outburst.

Junior Sarah Browning (3-8) took the loss after going six innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits with five strikeouts.

At the plate, senior Hannah Reese and junior Kelly Martin each had an RBI. Reese went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored and Martin went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Alison Kach (4-3) grabbed the win after tossing the final 2.2 innings and allowing just two hits.

Marietta (11-13, 4-4), which was limited to four hits, was paced by Courtney Kerwood and Brianna Finck. Kerwood had one hit and an RBI and Finck had one hit, an RBI and a run scored.

In the nightcap, freshman Amy Clark belted her second home run of the season and junior Amber Bova delivered an RBI single in the fifth to give Muskingum a 2-0 lead.

The Muskies added to their cushion with a four-run top of the seventh which was highlighted by sophomore Jessica Matthews' three-run home run. The long ball was the fourth of the season for Matthews.

Sophomore Morgan Craig also aided the Muskie offensive output by going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Junior Kristin Gill (3-5) notched the win after firing six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits.

Alexis O'Hair (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work.

Sarah Mayo led the Pioneer bats going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Kerwood also had a pair of hits.

Muskingum (11-15, 2-6) next hosts OAC foe Wilmington on Wednesday, April 8. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Donna J. Newberry Field.
