Softball splits DH with regional foe Thomas More

The Muskingum softball team split a doubleheader against regional foe Thomas More on Saturday at Donna J. Newberry Field. The Muskies rallied and won the opener 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh and fell in game two, 7-5.

In the opener, the Muskies scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh to stun Thomas More. 

Senior Hannah Reese walked to open the frame and junior Kelly Martin then belted a two-run home run down the left-field line. Sophomore Jessica Matthews followed with a walk-off home run to left center to propel the Muskies to the thrilling win.

Matthews ended the game going 3-for-4 with two runs and one home run. Martin went 2-for-2 with two runs and a two-run home run.

Senior Hannah Reese went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and senior Jaclynn Hess went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Freshman Haylea Debolt (1-0) earned her first career win after tossing two relief innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Junior Sarah Browning started the outing and went five innings and allowed three runs on six hits.

Staci Stewart led the Saints with a three-run home run. Sammy Sagers added two RBIs.

Mamee Salzer (6-4) took the loss after allowing six runs on 10 hits.

In game two, Thomas More (13-9) used a six-run fourth inning to grab the win. The Saints scored six runs on four hits in the frame.

The Muskies trimmed their gap to 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth and had the game-tying run on third when the inning ended.

Reese led the team with two doubles and one run. Junior Fallon Gawry went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Martin and sophomore Alyxis Moore each added one RBI.

Junior Kristin Gill (2-5) suffered the loss after tossing three innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits.

Dallis Knotts secured the win after firing five innings and allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits. Salzer notched the save after going the final two innings and allowing one hit.

Ana Walter led the Saints going 2-for-3 with two doubles and Sammy Sagers and Krista Summe each had three RBIs.

Muskingum (10-14) next plays at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta on Monday, April 6. The doubleheader is slated for 3:00 p.m.
