Capital sweeps Muskingum

Capital grabbed a doubleheader sweep against Muskingum at Donna J. Newberry Field on Tuesday. The Crusaders rallied to win game one 10-9 and took the nightcap in a six-inning game called for darkness, 7-3.

In the opener, Muskingum (9-13, 1-5) led 9-5 after five innings only to see Capital (14-7, 5-1) score twice in the sixth and plate three runs in the seventh secure the comeback win.

Senior Jessica Poff made her first career start and went two innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Junior Sarah Browning (3-7) was tagged with the loss after tossing five relief innings and allowing six runs on seven hits. 

Senior Jaclynn Hess led the team with a three-run double. Junior Amber Bova went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored. Senior Hannah Reese scored two runs.

Kelsey Swain led the Crusaders with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the top of the seventh with two outs to give Capital the lead.

Marisa Koss added a pair of doubles and one RBI.

Amber Martinelli (3-0) earned the win after throwing 3.1 innings in relief and allowing one run on two hits.

In the nightcap, Capital jumped out to a 6-3 lead after two innings and claimed the victory when the game was stopped in the top of the seventh due to darkness.

Brooke Billings (5-5) notched the win after going six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.

Leanna Cotton led Capital at the plate going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run. Ashley Knowles went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Junior Kristin Gill (2-4) was handed the loss after starting and allowing six runs on five hits in one inning of work. Freshman Haylea Debolt made her collegiate debut and pitched five strong innings and allowed one run on six hits.

Reese led the offensive output with a two-run double and sophomore Kelly Martin went 2-for-3 with a triple.

Muskingum next travels to rival Marietta on Friday, April 3. Game time of the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 3:00 p.m.
