Softball suffers DH setback at Heidelberg

The Muskingum softball team suffered a doubleheader setback at Heidelberg on Sunday. Heidelberg won the opener 9-8 in eight innings and took the nightcap, 8-7.

In the opener, the Muskies had a three-run seventh-inning lead evaporate and lost in the bottom of the eighth on a shortstop error.

Muskingum scored eight runs on 15 hits. Sophomore Jessica Matthews led the team going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. She belted a two-run home run, a double and scored two runs.

Senior Hannah Reese laced three doubles and had two RBIs and scored two runs. Senior Jaclynn Hess had thee hits with two doubles, two RBIs and one run.

Junior Sarah Browning (3-6) took the loss after allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits.

Cori Long (6-1) got the win after tossing one relief inning and allowing one run on two hits.

Paige Atterholt started and went seven innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on 13 hits.

Abbey McKee, Kayla Zachrich and Kyleah Brey all had two RBIs to lead the Student Princes.

In the nightcap, Reese led the Muskies going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a solo home run. The long ball was the fourth of Reese's career.

Sophomore Alyxis Moore went 2-for-2 with two runs and Matthews and junior Kelly Martin each added a pair of hits, with a double.

Junior Kristin Gill (2-3) was handed the loss after starting and lasting 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on three hits.

Atterholt (3-2) picked up the win in relief after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing one run on five hits.

Marissa Smego led the 'Berg with two RBIs.

Heidelberg trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second but scored four in the second and three in the third to grab the momentum and take a 7-2 lead. The Muskies slowly trimmed their deficit to one entering the seventh and threatened with the tying run on second base with one out but two straight outs ended the game.

Muskingum (9-11, 1-3) next hosts Capital on Tuesday, March 31. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Donna J. Newberry Field.
