Softball musters DH split at Denison

The Muskingum softball team mustered a doubleheader split at Denison on Tuesday afternoon. The Big Red won the opener 2-0 and the Muskies took the nightcap, 4-1.

In the opener, a costly Muskie error in the fourth opened the door for Denison (7-5) to plate two unearned runs. Denison's Lauren Secaras used the two-run cushion to improve to 4-0 after limiting the Muskies to three hits in seven innings of work.

Muskingum sophomore Jessica Matthews, senior Jaclynn Hess and junior Fallon Gawry all had a hit.

Sophomore Sarah Browning took the loss after going six innings and allowing two unearned runs on seven hits. Browning now stands at 3-5 on the season.

Julie Rooney and Marlie Mounts led Denison with two hits each.

In the nightcap, Muskingum grabbed the early momentum with a three-run first. The Muskies scored three runs on four hits. Muskingum added its final tally in the sixth on junior Kelly Martin's RBI single.

Matthews led the squad going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Hess also added an RBI.

Martin and senior Hannah Reese each had two hits.

Junior Kristin Gill tossed the complete game gem to improve to 2-2. She scattered seven hits and allowed one unearned run.

Erin Laswell took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits. She now stands at 2-5.

Rooney, Kerry Hager and Erinn Henry all had two each to pace the Big Red.

Muskingum (9-9, 1-1) next travels to Ohio Athletic Conference foe Heidelberg on Saturday, March 28. Game one of the slated twinbill is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
