Softball sweeps Ohio Weslyean

The Muskingum softball team won its home opener by sweeping Ohio Wesleyan on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Donna J. Newberry Field. The Muskies won the opener 6-5 and took the nightcap in five innings, 11-3.

With the sweep, Muskingum moves to 7-7 overall. The Muskies next open Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 21 at John Carroll. Game one of the scheduled doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

In the opener, Muskingum won the game in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Amber Bova led the inning off with a triple to right field and scored when freshman Melissa Maiorano followed her with a single off the fence to right field. The Muskies ended the outing with 12 hits.

Freshman Amy Clark helped lead the charge going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. She had a two-run double and a two-run single.

Bova went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and senior Carissa Johnson went 1-for-3 with two runs.

Sophomore Sarah Browning pitched the complete game and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits with six strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Muskingum rallied from a 3-0 top of the second deficit by scoring 11 unanswered runs to grab the mercy-rule win.

The Muskies erupted for five runs in the bottom of third to take a 5-3 edge. The outburst was highlighted by junior Kelly Martin's three-run home run. The blast was the first for the Muskies this season and second of Martin's career. Martin ended the game going 3-for-3 with four RBIs, one home run, one double and two runs.

Muskingum added two runs in the third and ended the scoring with four runs in the fourth. Sophomore Alyxis Moore propelled the fire power in the fourth with a two-run home run. The long ball the first of Moore's career.

Senior Jaclynn Hess and Bova each had two hits with a double and junior Fallon Gawry had two hits.

Junior Kristin Gill earned the win with three innings of three-hit relief with four strikeouts.
