Men's soccer valient effort falls short

The Muskingum men's soccer team lost its season-and-home opener on Saturday night in McConagha Stadium against Spalding, 1-0.

Spalding scored the game-winning strike in the seventh minute when Abdullahi Abdullahi knocked in a corner kick from Joey Lesher. The Golden Eagles ended the outing with 10 shots.

Muskingum's best opportunities to score came off the foot of freshman Trent Newby. Newby put the lone Muskie shot on frame that was saved by Logan Spencer in the opening half and added two additional strikes that barely missed the frame.

The Muskies ended the physical outing with six shots.

Senior Eric Riley played all 90 minutes in frame and recorded three saves and allowed one goal.

Spencer logged the shutout after going the distance in goal and making one save.

Muskingum hits the field next at Mt. St. Joseph on Wednesday, September 3. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
