Barr and Pferfferkorn score goals in season-opening loss vs. Wittenberg

The Muskingum University men's soccer team stumbled in its season opener against Wittenberg University at the Capital University Tournament on Friday afternoon, 4-2.

The Muskie attack was paced by junior John Barr who notched a goal and assist. Freshman Andreas Pfefferkorn also added a tally for the Muskies.

Pffefferkorn's strike came in the 22nd minute off a pass from Barr to tie the game at 1-1. Pfefferkorn ended the outing with three shots.

Barr's goal came in the 53rd minute after he beat a defender and found the back of the net. The tally trimmed the Muskie deficit to 3-2. Barr ended the game with three shots.

The Muskies ended the contest with an 12-8 edge in shots and 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman Mathias Buchner played the opening 45 minutes between the pipes and allowed three goals and made one save. Senior Will Hess played the final 45 minutes in frame and allowed one goal and recorded one save.

Wittenberg grabbed the early momentum with a goal in the 14th minute and added two more in the 40th and 41st minutes. The Tigers final tally came in the 66th minute.

Muskingum returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 4 when it hosts the College of Wooster. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. in McConagha Stadium and will feature live stats on the Muskie Sports Network.
