Men's Lacrosse suffers heartbreaking overtime loss

The Muskingum men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Marietta Pioneers. The Muskies scored four goals in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but ended up falling 10-9 in the extra time.

Notables

  • During the action, senior Spencer Zecchini eclipsed 200 career points. Zecchini is the first Muskie to surpass this milestone in program history.

  • Records: Muskingum (7-6 Overall, 1-4 OAC), Marietta (7-5 Overall, 4-1 OAC)
  • Location: Bullock Health and Wellness Complex - New Concord, Ohio

How It Ended

  • The Muskies entered the fourth quarter trailing the Pioneers by three.
  • Using a plethora of offensive options, the Muskies proceeded to tally four goals in the final quarter while only giving up one.
  • Senior Spencer Zecchini got things going with 9:07 left in regulation.
  • Senior Jack Watts added a score not long after at the 6:03 mark.
  • After the Pioneers added one goal with 5:54 left, things were starting to shift back towards Marietta's favor.
  • Then the Muskies rattled off two goals in the span of two minutes and all of a sudden things were all tied up at 9-9.
  • The Muskies would have two more looks at ending things in regulation as freshman Evan Cosgrove ripped off two shots with 30 seconds remaining. Cosgrove would find the post on the second attempt and Marietta would secure the ground ball to take things to overtime.
  • In overtime the Muskies had one offensive opportunity that Marietta would hold off.

Inside The Numbers

  • The Muskies recorded nine goals, eight assists, 48 shots, 42 ground balls, seven caused turnovers, and 15 saves.
  • Zecchini and Cosgrove led the Muskies with three goals a piece. They both added in an assist during the game.
  • Sophomore Tyler Workman, graduate Maxwell Pezzot, and Watts each added in one goal. 
  • Senior Grant Webster added in three assists to facilitate the offense.
  • Freshman Andrew Beaudoin dished out two assists for the Muskie offense.
  • Senior Blake Turano had one assist and two ground balls.
  • Junior Drew Schneider had a 11 ground ball game and finished 15-22 on faceoffs.
  • Senior Chase Kesler added in three caused turnovers to lead the defense. 
  • Senior Trevor Connolly notched 15 saves in goal through 61 minutes of action. 
  • Marietta was led by Nate Neal who logged two goals and two assists in the contest.
