Men’s Basketball drops home opener to Washington & Jefferson

The Muskingum men's basketball team dropped its home opener to Washington & Jefferson, 88-81, on Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Marcus Dempsey led all scorers with 31 points, shooting 13-for-24 from the field, and tallied three rebounds.
  • Jarrell Marsh collected his second straight double-double of the season, finishing with 20 points and a game-best 10 rebounds, while adding two blocks and two assists.
  • Mitch Clark grabbed nine rebounds and accrued three steals.
  • As a team, the Muskies went 31-for-71 (43.7%) from the field and 11-for-36 from the arc (30.6%).

  • Brian Lindquist paced the Presidents offense with 20 points, while Nicholas Campalong added 16 points and eight rebounds, Mike Zappala led the reserves with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Jonathan Devito chipped in 12 points.
  • W&J made 56.6% of their shots (30-for-53), went 7-for-14 from the arc (50%), and ended the contest going 21-for-29 from the free-throw line (72.4%).

Game Highlights

The Muskies held the largest led of the first half, 11-4, at the 16:13 marker. From that point on, the two squads exchanged two led changes and four ties. Muskingum held the 38-34 advantage with 3:03 left, but Washington & Jefferson used a 6-2 run to tie the contest at 40-40. The Muskies had several shot opportunities at the end of the half, but couldn't connect, leaving the game tied at intermission.

The Presidents took a commanding 10-4 run to start the second half, leading 53-44 with 15 minutes remaining. Muskingum worked their way back and pulled within one point when Dempsey drilled a three-pointer with 30 seconds left in the game. The Muskies had open looks at the basket, but missed a jumper and three-pointer. Forcing them to quickly foul W&J's Nicholas Campalong who completed six free throws at the end to seal the 88-81 victory.
