Men's Basketball stings 24th-ranked Baldwin Wallace in OT

The Muskingum men's basketball team defeated 24th-ranked Baldwin Wallace 98-95 in an Ohio Athletic Conference overtime thriller Saturday afternoon to remain perfect at home. 

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (6-1 overall, 2-1 OAC), Baldwin Wallace (5-2 overall, 1-2 OAC)

Hoops for Hunger

  • Muskingum's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted a Hoops for Hunger Food Drive during the Muskie basketball doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace and collected more than 1,100 canned good items. All food and monetary contributions will be donated to the College Drive Presbyterian Church Food Pantry in New Concord.  

First Half

  • Muskingum used a 14-6 surge over a seven-minute span to grab the early momentum with 13:28 to play.
  • The Muskies took its largest lead of the half 20-11 with 9:57 remaining following a layup by sophomore Jarrell Marsh.
  • The Yellow Jackets came storming back, taking its first lead of the contest 24-22 off a jumper by Cam Kuhn with 6:50 remaining.
  • Baldwin Wallace outscored the Muskies 17-10 in the final five minutes to claim the 43-36 lead at the break.
  • Muskingum shot 13-for-34 (.382) from the field and 4-for-11 (.364) from behind the arc.
  • Marsh led the Muskies, netting 15 first half points.
  • The Yellow Jackets shot 16-for-38 (.421) from the field and 4-for-13 (.308) from three-point land.
  • Kuhn led Baldwin Wallace with 16 points.

Second Half

  • Freshman Marcus Dempsey and Marsh led the Muskies in the opening three minutes of the second half as the duo combined for 10 of the teams 12 points to pull within 49-47 with 16:47 remaining.
  • The Yellow Jackets responded with a 10-0 run to extend its lead to 63-52 at the 14:03 mark.
  • Muskingum slowly began to claw its way back into the contest as a three-pointer from Dempsey and back-to-back layups from Marsh and senior Joshua Keyes gave the Muskies its first lead of the half 78-76 with 4:46 to play.
  • Senior Rickey Wilson connected from downtown with 3:33 remaining to give the Muskies its largest lead of the half 84-76.
  • Baldwin Wallace continued to battle as they responded with a 7-0 run to pull within 84-83 with 1:36 left in regulation.
  • Trailing 88-83, the Yellow Jackets scored the final five points of the half to force overtime.

Overtime

  • The Muskies used a 7-0 run led by Dempsey and Keyes to take the 97-93 advantage with :12 seconds remaining.
  • Baldwin Wallace pulled within 97-95 before Dempsey sunk the Yellow Jackets at the free throw line en route to the 98-95 victory.

Post Game

  • Muskingum saw four players finish in double figures.
  • Keyes led the way for Muskingum posting his third double-double of the season scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
  • Marsh finished the contest with a season-high 31 points.
  • Paige posted a season-high 14 points, while Dempsey tied a career-high 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
  • Muskingum shot 8-for-19 (.421) from three-point land and 35-for-68 (.515) from the field.
  • The Yellow Jackets were led by Kuhn with a team-high 31 points.
  • Jay Battle added 17 points, while Jake Fetherolf and Michael Quiring both chipped in 13 points each.
  • Baldwin Wallace finished the contest 36-for-86 (.419) from the field and 12-for-37 (.324) from behind the arc.
