Senior Day win ignites Muskie Fever outbreak

The Muskingum men's basketball team caused a Muskie Fever outbreak in a packed Rec Center on Saturday by delivering a 70-63 Senior Day win against Baldwin Wallace.

The game marked the final outing for seniors Dave Brown, Clay Owings, Phil Ellis, Isaiah Shakespeare and Jarod Hood, who were all recognized prior to the start of the contest.

Brown scored 11 points with a pair of rebounds. Brown ends his career as Muskingum's all-time leader in free throw shooting percentage (.903), all-time leader for free throw shooting percentage for a season (.926) and the record holder for consecutive free throws made (45). He also tied the records for best free throw shooting percentage (16/16) for a game and most free throws made in a game (16).

Owings added nine points and five rebounds, while Ellis chipped in six points and three rebounds. Shakespeare totalled three boards, two assists and one point and Hood saw action for seven minutes.

Junior Logan Kimble and sophomore Cody Seiler each scored 13 points, with Seiler just missing the double-double with nine rebounds. Sophomore Christian Keller had 10 points and five rebounds.

Muskingum (8-17, 3-15) ended the outing shooting .415 (22-of-53) and held a 41-34 edge in rebounds. The Muskie bench also added a big spark outscoring the Yellow Jackets 43-23. 

Baldwin Wallace (13-12, 9-9) was paced by Kevin Krakowiak who scored 15 points. Tyler Ferrell added 13 markers.

In the first half, Muskigum built a 24-14 lead with 7:24 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets used a late 17-8 run to close the half. The Muskies led 32-31 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Muskies took a 49-39 lead with 12:25 to play on a pair of Keller free throws.

Muskingum took its largest lead of the outing at 55-44 following a pair of Brown free throws with 9:05 on the clock.

Baldwin Wallace rallied over the next seven minutes and tied the game at 63-63 on a three-pointer by Krakowiak with 1:50 to play. 

The Muskies answered and closed the game with a 7-0 surge that brought the Muskie fans screaming to their feet in appreciation of the total-game effort.
