Muskies fall late against BW in Homecoming contest

The Muskingum football team suffered a Homecoming heartbreak against Baldwin Wallace on a warm Saturday afternoon in McConagha Stadium. The Muskies late charge concluded deep in Baldwin Wallace territory and ended with a 23-20 Yellow Jacket win.

How It Happened

With the game tied 20-20 midway through the fourth quarter, Baldwin Wallace took a 23-20 lead after piecing together a nine-play, 31-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard field goal by Brandon Vollmer. Muskingum took possession at its 26-yard line with 2:09 on the clock and drove to the Baldwin Wallace 31-yard line following three first downs, which included two third-down conversions. The Muskies faced a 4th-and-11 from the BW 32-yard line when freshman quarterback Brody Hahn zipped a ball to junior wide receiver Darius Hayes-Carruth who appeared to make the catch against defensive back Ty Fields at the BW 12-yard line. However, the play was ruled an intereption as Fields wrestled the ball away from Hayes-Carruth. The turnover sealed the road win for the Yellow Jackets.

Scoring Drives

  • Baldwin Wallace led 10-0 after the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets scored on a 61-yard touchdown pass from Jake Hudson to Rob Wolfington and Vollmer connected on a 40-yard field goal.
  • Muskingum trimmed its deficit to 10-7 at the 8:44 mark of the second quarter on Hahn's three-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Granger Long. The touchdown capped off a six-play, 47-yard drive.
  • Vollmer gave Baldwin Wallace a 13-7 lead at the half with a 22-yard field goal to end an eight-play, 69-yard drive.
  • Muskingum orchestrated a 15-play, 75-yard drive that ended with sophomore running back Bernard Johnson scoring on a one-yard touchdown plunge. However, Muskingum missed the extra point and the game remained tied at 13-13 with 4:16 left in the third.
  • Baldwin Wallace answered the Muskie score on its first snap after the score with a 58-yard touchdown pass from Hudson to Jordan Leverette. The quick score gave the Yellow Jackets a 20-13 lead with 3:58 left in the third quarter.
  • The Muskies responded and tied the game (20-20) at the 14:55 mark of the fourth quarter on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Hahn to senior wide out Damon Jones. The strike ended an eight-play, 75-yard drive.

 Inside The Numbers

  • Hahn ened the game going 21-of-37 for 216 yards and two scores, with one interception. He also added 31 yards rushing on 14 totes.
  • Jones led all receivers with a career-high 144 yards receiving with one touchdown.
  • Johnson added seven catches for 50 yards and had 12 carries for 18 yards and one score.
  • Senior defensive tackle Staci Wilson led the Muskie defense with nine stops, including three tackles for loss and one sack.
  • Sophomore defensive end Tim OUsley had seven stops with two tackles for loss and one sack.
  • Freshman defensive back Brian Brown made three hits and notched one interception.
  • Hudson led the BW offense going 16-of-20 for 285 yards and two scores with one interception. 
  • Austin Smith led the rushers with 32 yards on nine carries.
  • Wolfington hauled in four catches for 131 yards and one touchdown.
  • Sean Nischwitz led BW with nine tackles and one sack, while Sam Groff had eight hits.
