The Muskingum football team lost at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta in the Shriners Game on a chilly Saturday afternoon, 49-28. With the setback, Muskingum now leads the Shriner series with a 6-1 mark.
The Basics

How It Happened
- Marietta grabbed an early 7-0 lead after taking advantage of a Muskie fumble to piece together a three-play, 33-yard drive that resulted with Lucas Havens scoring on a 31-yard touchdown run.
- Muskingum tied the game at the 10:47 mark of the opening frame on senior quarterback Cody Williams' 38-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Griffin Degener. The score marked Degener's first career receiving touchdown.
- Williams gave the Muskies a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter on an eight-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Aron Sutton.
- Marietta tied the game on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Havens to Alex Smith with 10:33 on the clock.
- The Muskies regained the edge on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Williams to freshman receiver Darius Hayes-Carruth.
- The Pioneers tied the game at 21-21 with 17 seconds left in the half on Havens' one-yard touchdown plunge.
- In the second half, both teams traded touchdowns to keep the game tied at 28-28. Roger Bush scored on a four-yard run for Marietta and freshman running back Jordan Scanlon scored on a 10-yard run.
- Marietta grabbed the lead for good on a trick play that resulted in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Nick Hineman in the waning seconds of the third frame.
- The Pioneers found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring en route to capturing the Shriner Game win.
- Muskingum ended the contest with 314 yards of offense.
- Williams accounted for 164 yards of total offense. He threw for 122 yards and three scores and added 42 yards on the ground. Williams was named the Muskingum Shriner MVP.
- Junior running back Melvin Smith rushed for 105 yards on 19 carries. He averaged 5.5 yards per tote.
- Hayes-Carruth, Sutton and Degener all registered one touchdown reception.
- Senior linebacker Zach Barry and sophomore linebacker Logan Ryan led the Muskie defense with 11 stops each. Barry also had one tackle for loss.
- Marietta churned out 436 yards of offense.
- Havens passed for 190 yards and one score and rushed for 76 yards and two scores. He was named the Marietta Shriner MVP.
- Roger Bush rushed for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
- Smith led the receivers with two receptions for 92 yards and one touchdown.
- Daryl DeWindt and Joe Ortega led the Pioneer defense with 11 tackles each and one tackle for loss each. DeWindt also forced a fumble.
