ONU uses 2nd-half surge to beat Muskies

Ohio Northern scored 21 unanswered second-half points en route to beating Muskingum on Saturday night in Ada, 31-10.

Muskingum junior quarterback Cody Williams connected with freshman wide receiver Damon Jones for a 24-yard touchdown to give the Muskies a 7-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The score was the first of Jones' career.

Ohio Northern (4-3, 3-3) answered the Muskie challenge when Patrick Angle completed a 64-yard touchdown pass to Chad Bridges to give the Polar Bears a 10-7 lead with 2:57 to play in the half.

The Muskies then orchestrated a 13-play, 55-yard drive to set-up sophomore kicker Cody Dent's 34-yard field goal at the end of the half to send the game into intermission tied at 10-10.

Following halftime, the second half belonged to the Polar Bears. Ohio Northern pieced together three touchdown scoring drives to tally the final 21 points of the contest to secure the win.

The Muskies (1-6, 1-5) mustered 151 yards of total offense. Williams directed the attack going 6-of-30 for 56 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also added 44 yards on eight carries.

Junior running back  Melvin Smith led the Muskie rushers with 57 yards on 11 totes. Jones had a team-best 31 yards receiving on two receptions with one touchdown.

Junior linebacker Chaney Fulton had a game-high 16 tackles with one sack and three tackles for loss. Senior linebacker Damond Goggins added 15 stops and freshman defensive back Hayden Fulton had 12 hits.

Angle went 15-of-22 for 179 yards and two touchdowns to pace the ONU offense which churned out 398 yards.

Justin Magazine rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries to lead all rushers. Bridges hauled in four grabs for 92 yards and one score to pace the Polar Bear receivers.

Dan Eller led the ONU defense with seven tackles, one fumble recovery and one interception.

Muskingum next hosts nationally-ranked John Carroll on Saturday, November 1. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in McConagha Stadium.
