Mount Union powers past Muskingum

The Muskingum football team fell in its home and Ohio Athletic Conference opener against third-ranked Mount Union on Saturday afternoon in McConagha Stadium, 62-6.

The Purple Raiders (2-0, 1-0) seized control of the contest with a 45-point first half, that included 21 points in the opening quarter.

The Muskies' score came in the third quarter on a 10-play, 41-yard drive that culminated with junior quarterback Cody Williams scoring on a five-yard run. The extra point attempt by sophomore Cody Dent was blocked. The scoring drive was set up by senior linebacker Damond Goggins' interception.

Mount Union ended the game with 565 yards of offense, while the Muskies mustered 128 yards.

Williams ended the game going 6-of-18 for 67 yards with a pair of interceptions. He also added 20 yards on the ground with a touchdown.

Junior Dominic Bell led the Muskie rushing attack with 42 yards on 10 totes. Junior Melvin Smith also added 17 yards on nine carries.

Senior Marvin Morris led the receivers with two receptions for 25 yards. Senior tight end Bryson Stephen hauled in one catch for 20 yards.

Junior linebacker Zach Barry paced the defensive effort with 10 tackles. Sophomore Tyler Lancaster and Goggins each tallied nine stops.

Kevin Burke directed the Mount Union aerial assault going 17-of-21 for 272 yards and four touchdowns.

Luc Meacham, Roman Namdar, Tervel Parrish and Zach Herrington all had touchdown receptions.

B.J. Mitchell rushed for a team-best 73 yards on nine carries with one score.

Alex Kocheff and LeShawn Luke each registered five tackles to lead the Purple Raider defense.

Muskingum (0-2, 0-1) next hosts Capital (2-0, 1-0) on Saturday, September 27. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
