Palmieri knocks two home runs as Baseball splits with Wittenberg

The Muskingum baseball team split a double header against Wittenberg on Saturday. After dropping the first game 15-5, the Muskies bounced back and closed out another close game by a score of 12-11. Sophomore Sam Palmieri hit a home run in each of the games to propel the Muskies.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (7-7), Wittenberg (6-6)

Game 1

  • Muskingum scored five runs on 12 hits and had two errors.
  • Senior Gavin Hawk led the Muskies with three hits, one RBI, and one run scored.
  • Palmieri had the lone home run for the Muskies.
  • Senior Ryan Schwartz had two hits with one run scored 
  • Sophomore Louie Hess added a two hit performance with one RBI.
  • Freshman Conner Thamann added in a one hit, two RBI performance.
  • Junior Tobie Teke had one hit with two walks.
  • Hess, Hawk, and senior Wyatt Reeder each had a double in the game.
  • A combination of senior Erik Cover, senior Jaxon Rinkes, sophomore Trent Youngeberg, and junior Brock Pfister each had time on the mound for the Muskies.
  • Rocco Royer had a four hit performance for Wittenberg.
  • Conor O'Malley adde din three hits and scored three runs.
  • Kyle Mahon earned the win with 3.2 innings pitched and four strikeouts.

Game 2

  • Muskingum scored 12 runs on 13 hits and had three errors.
  • The Muskies used a home run in the top of the ninth inning by Palmieri to push the lead to 12-10.
  • The Wittenberg offense didn't go quietly, as they tacked on a home run of their own in the bottom of the ninth and proceeded to get base runners on third and second with two outs in the inning.
  • Sophomore Nathan Johnson, who earned the save in yesterday's nail-biting finish against Wash. & Jeff., once again earned the save by dotting a called third strike on the corner of the zone to end the game. 
  • Palmieri had three hits with two RBI's and a walk in the contest to lead the Muskies.
  • Tobie Teke added in a three hit performance that saw three RBI's and two runs scored tallied on.
  • Senior Wyatt Reeder tallied three hits and two RBI's, while also having two runs scored.
  • Schwartz had one hit and one RBI. He added in one run scored.
  • Junior Weston Melick had two RBI's on one hit and scored one run.
  • Palmieri and Melick had a home run in the game.
  • Palmieri, Teke, Schwartz, and Reeder each had a double in the game.
  • Freshman Shoei Yamashita earned the win on the mound for the Muskies, after going five innings and striking out six batters.
  • Freshman Gavin Schultz, freshman Luke Spencer, sophomore Max Vosters, and Johnson each came in for relief for the Muskies.
  • Tommy Chilicki had a four hit performance for Wittenberg.

Up Next

  • The Muskies will be back in action on Tuesday, March 19, when they face Ohio Wesleyan at 4:00 p.m. This game will mark the home opener for the Muskies.
