Baseball sweeps Hiram for 20th win of season

The Muskingum baseball team tallied 24 total runs on 30 hits in the Muskies' two-game sweep of Hiram on Thursday afternoon en route to the team's 20th win of the year. Sophomore Weston Melick also made history by tallying his record setting 22nd double of the season.

Notables

  • Sophomore Weston Melick tallied his 22nd double of the year to set a new program record for most doubles in a season. The previous record was held by Brad Mercer who tallied 21 doubles in 1999.
  • Muskingum has now tallied 20 wins on the season, the most wins in a single campaign for the program since the 2010 season. Muskingum recorded 23 wins in 2010.
  • Both games of the doubleheader were seven inning contests.

Game One

The Difference

  • After Hiram plated six runs in the first inning, Muskingum found the scoreboard in the second off a two RBI single to center field by senior Dominic Gorence.
  • Muskingum scored again in the third inning off a fielding error by Hiram, and tallied two more runs in the fourth inning as well. The fourth inning was highlighted by an RBI single from sophomore Tobie Teke and an RBI single from sophomore Weston Melick.
  • In the fifth inning, Muskingum erupted for 10 runs to build a 15-7 lead over the Terriers. Six different Muskies tallied at least one RBI in the fifth inning.
  • In the sixth inning junior Gavin Hawk tallied a sacrifice fly to center field for Muskingum, and the Muskies recorded their final run of the game in the seventh inning off a wild pitch.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by senior Dominic Gorence who finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Weston Melick finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore Tobie Teke went 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
  • Junior Gavin Hawk tallied a 2-for-4 line with two RBI and two runs scored, while junior Ryan Schwartz went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
  • Freshman Louie Hess finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Sam Palmieri notched one hit and two runs scored.
  • Senior Allex Santacroce finished with one hit and two runs scored, while junior Wyatt Reeder also added one hit and two RBI.
  • Freshman Max Vosters started on the mound for Muskingum. Vosters tossed one inning and gave up five earned runs.
  • Sophomore Austin Lippolis earned the win on the mound after pitching four innings in relief and giving up four earned runs.
  • Hiram was led by Hal Walker Jr. who finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

 

Game Two

The Difference

  • After Hiram scored the first run of the game in the third, Muskingum got on the board in the fourth via an RBI single from senior Dominic Gorence.
  • Hiram reclaimed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but Muskingum immediately answered with four runs in the fifth inning. The inning was highlighted by an RBI single from Wyatt Reeder and an RBI single from freshman Louie Hess.
  • Hiram tallied two more runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough as Muskingum secured the 5-4 win.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by senior Dominic Gorence who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Junior Wyatt Reeder tallied a 1-for-4 line with two runs scored and an RBI, while freshman Louie Hess notched one hit and one RBI.
  • Senior Allex Santacroce finished with a hit and a run scored, while sophomore Tobie Teke also tallied one hit and one run.
  • Junior Ryan Schwartz notched one run scored, while Sophomore Weston Melick finished with two hits.
  • Freshman Sheadon Sullivan earned his first collegiate win on the mound after tossing 5 and one-third innings for Muskingum. Sullivan did not allow an earned run during his time on the mound, and also tallied four strikeouts.
  • Senior Clark Jennings nailed down his second save of the season after tossing one and two-thirds innings in relief.
  • Hiram was led by Logan Gallentine who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

  • Muskingum will be back in action on Saturday, April 29, when they welcome OAC-foe Otterbein to Mose Morehead Field. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
