Baseball splits OAC doubleheader at Heidelberg

The Muskingum baseball team split an OAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Heidelberg. Muskingum claimed game one 4-2 and fell in game two 13-6.

The Basics

  • Muskingum (17-14 Overall, 5-9 OAC), Heidelberg (13-19 Overall, 5-9 OAC)
  • Location: Peaceful Valley – Tiffin, Ohio

Game One

The Difference

  • Muskingum drew first blood in the second inning when junior Ryan Schwartz ripped an RBI  single through the right side to score junior Gavin Hawk.
  • Later in the inning, senior Dominic Gorence tallied a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Schwartz and push Muskingum's advantage to 2-0.
  • In the third, Muskingum tallied two more runs to double their lead. The first ran came off an RBI double from sophomore Weston Melick, while the second came via an RBI double from sophomore Austin Lippolis.
  • Despite Heidelberg tallying two runs in the bottom of the third inning, Muskingum's pitching staff held strong to shut out the Student Princes the rest of the way and nail down the victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by junior Ryan Schwartz who finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Weston Melick finished 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore Austin Lippolis finished with a double and an RBI.
  • Sophomore Tobie Teke tallied one hit and scored a run for the Muskies, while senior Dominic Gorence registered one RBI.
  • Freshman Jake Roshau got the start on the mound for Muskingum. Roshau pitched his first collegiate complete game and gave up two earned runs. He also struck out three Heidelberg batters for his third win of the season.
  • Heidelberg was led by Andrew McVicker who went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

 

Game Two

The Difference

  • Muskingum tallied third first run of game two in the third inning when sophomore Weston Melick slashed a single through the right side to score freshman Sam Palmieri.
  • Muskingum's bats came alive in the seventh inning, tallying five runs in the frame.
  • The first two runs came via a throwing error by Heidelberg, while the third run was scored when Palmieri ripped an RBI single into center field.
  • Muskingum got on the board again with their fourth run of the inning via an RBI ground out from Melick, and junior Gavin Hawk capped off the frame with an RBI double to center field.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by freshman Sam Palmieri who finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Junior Gavin Hawk went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while sophomore Weston Melick notched a 1-for-4 line with an RBI.
  • Junior Wyatt Reeder finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while senior Dominic Gorence notched one hit and one run scored.
  • Sophomore Austin Lippolis started on the mound for Muskingum. Lippolis tossed three and one-third innings and gave up five earned runs.
  • Heidelberg was led by Andrew Pokley who finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
