Baseball earns electrifying sweep over Franciscan

The Muskingum baseball team used clutch offense in game two to earn an electrifying doubleheader sweep over Franciscan on Monday afternoon. The Muskies dominated game one 8-1, and used a six run fifth inning to secure an 11-10 comeback win in the nightcap.

The Basics

Notables

  • The doubleheader featured two seven inning contests.
  • Freshman Jackson Duchesne earned his first career win on the mound for Muskingum in game one. Duchesne pitched six innings and gave up one earned run.
  • After trailing 9-3, Muskingum tallied two runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth inning to secure the comeback win in game two. Freshman Sam Palmieri tallied the go-ahead RBI single in the fifth inning that scored junior Anthony Andres.

Game One

The Difference

  • Muskingum jumped on the Barons early, tallying four runs in the first inning to take a commanding lead. The inning was highlighted by an RBI double from sophomore Austin Lippolis that scored sophomore Weston Melick.
  • After Franciscan scored one run in the top of the fourth, Muskingum immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning when Melick tallied a basses clearing double. Scoring on the play was senior Ethan Guilliams, sophomore Tobie Teke, and freshman Sam Palmieri.
  • Later in the inning junior Ryan Schwartz registered an RBI triple to score Melick and bring the score to 8-1.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by sophomore Weston Melick who finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Tobie Teke finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while freshman Sam Palmieri went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Junior Gavin Hawk notched a 1-for-4 line with an RBI and a run scored, while junior Ryan Schwartz and sophomore Austin Lippolis both went 1-for-3 with an RBI each.
  • Senior Dominic Gorence notched an RBI for Muskingum as well, while senior Ethan Guilliams went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Franciscan was led by Wade Stoehr who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Freshman Jackson Duchesne earned his first career win on the mound after tossing six innings and giving up one earned run.
  • Freshman Trent Youngeberg tossed one scoreless inning in relief for Muskingum as well.

 

Game Two

The Difference

  • Muskingum jumped on the scoreboard early again in game two, registering two runs in the first frame. The inning was jump started by an RBI double from junior Ryan Schwartz that scored sophomore Tobie Teke, and later in the inning sophomore Austin Lippolis recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored sophomore Weston Melick.
  • In the second inning, Muskingum tallied another run on a throwing error by the catcher to push their lead to 3-0.
  • After Franciscan tallied nine runs across the third and fourth innings, Muskingum got back on the scoreboard in the fourth via a two RBI single from Teke. Teke's single scored seniors Ethan Guilliams and Dominic Gorence.
  • In the fifth inning, Muskingum erupted for six runs to recapture the lead. The inning started with a two RBI single from freshman Mike Davis, and senior Jake Hymrod knotted the score at nine apiece with a pinch-hit two RBI double down the left field line.
  • Freshman Sam Palmieri delivered the go-ahead run via an RBI single that scored junior Anthony Andres. Later in the inning, Palmieri added to the lead when he scored off a fielding error by the Barons.
  • Franciscan managed to add a run in the seventh inning, but Muskingum used clutch defense down the stretch to secure the victory.

  • Junior Ryan Schwartz went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior Dominic Gorence tallied a 2-for-2 line with three runs scored.
  • Freshman Mike Davis finished 1-for-4 with two RBI, while senior Jake Hymrod finished 1-for-1 with two RBI.
  • Sophomore Austin Lippolis and freshman Sam Palmieri both went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior Ethan Guilliams finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Franciscan was led by Samuel Tyler who went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Christopher Brison got the start on the mound for Muskingum. Brison tossed two and two-thirds innings and gave up two earned runs.
  • Junior Liam Carey tallied his second win of the season after pitching three innings in relief and giving up one earned run.

  • Muskingum will be back in action on Wednesday, April 19, when the host OAC-foe Marietta for a doubleheader. Game one is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Mose Morehead Field.
