Balanced effort leads Baseball to win over Hiram

Behind four and two-thirds hitless innings from freshman Jason Murphy, the Muskingum baseball team picked up an 8-4 win over Hiram on Tuesday afternoon.

The Basics

  • Freshman Jason Murphy picked up his first collegiate win on the mound after tossing four and two-thirds hitless innings in relief for the Muskies.
  • Sophomore Weston Melick continued his hot play with three RBI on the day.

The Difference

  • Hiram got the scoring started early, tallying one run in the first inning to open the game.
  • Extending their lead, the Terriers tallied three more runs in the third inning to push their advantage to 4-0.
  • However, in the bottom of the third Muskingum answered with two runs of their own to cut Hiram's in half lead at 4-2.
  • Muskingum took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning of a two-RBI double from sophomore Weston Melick. Melick's double gave Muskingum a 5-4 lead.
  • Not looking back, Muskingum added three more runs in the sixth inning to double up the Terriers at 8-4.
  • Freshman Jason Murphy nailed down the win, pitching four and two-thirds hitless innings in relief for the Muskies.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by sophomore Weston Melick who finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
  • Senior Dominic Gorence notched a 2-for-5 line with two RBI and a run scored, while junior Quinten Collins finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Sophomore Wyatt Reeder went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, while sophomore Travis Reynolds recorded a 1-for-3 line with two runs scored and one RBI.
  • Freshman Blake Jodrey got the start on the mound for Muskingum. Jodrey tossed three innings and gave up one earned run.
