Baseball's late surge falls short

The Muskingum baseball team's late-inning surge fell short on Tuesday afternoon against Kenyon. The Lords withstood the Muskies and left New Concord with a 4-3 win.

The Muskies trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. In the home frame, Muskingum broke up Kenyon's combined no-hitter and plated three runs on two hits. Senior Dallas Allen collected an RBI on a bases loaded hit by pitch and sophomore Michael Pagano hit a sacrifice fly to score Muskingum's second run. Sophomore Patrick McGinty rounded out the Muskie scoring with an infield hit to score senior Austin DeVore

Muskingum had multiple chances over the final three innings to tie the game. In the seventh, the Muskies had runners at second and third with two outs, in the eighth Muskingum had a runner on second with one out and in the ninth had runners on first and second with one out before a 4-6-3 double play ended the outing.

The Muskies ended the contest with three runs on four hits, with two errors. Freshman Bryce Husted (1-2) took the loss after tossing 5.2 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Junior Kyle Schmitgen fired the final 3.1 innings of no-hit ball with two strikeouts.

Kenyon (8-9) scored two runs on three hits in the third inning and completed its scoring with two runs on one hit in the fifth inning. Mickey Arman led the Lords with two RBIs and Jono Chafe belted an RBI triple. Kenyon ended the game with four runs on seven hits.

Tyler Roldan (1-0) earned the win and Jesse Bogacz closed out the ninth to notch the save.

Muskingum (7-9) next plays at Wooster on Wednesday, March 29. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
