Muskies and Polar Bears split DH

The Muskingum baseball team and Ohio Northern split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Mose Morehead Field. The Muskies won the opener 8-3 and the Polar Bears won the nightcap, 11-3.

Game 1

  • Freshman Darien Smith fired seven strong innings and Muskingum scored eight runs on nine hits to claim the opener.
  • Smith allowed two runs on five hits to move to 2-2 on the year.
  • Junior Dallas Allen belted two doubles, had two RBIs and scored two runs to pace the Muskies at the plate.
  • Junior Joe Shumar added a triple and two RBIs.
  • Junior Matt Lynn went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
  • Senior Christian Leitenberger and freshman Marc Ibarra each had an RBI.
  • Nick Eltzroth took the loss to drop to 4-3. He pitched seven innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits. He also had an RBI double.
  • Jordan Bostater logged an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Game 2

  • Ohio Northern used a six-run top of the ninth to pull away from Muskingum en route to gaining the split. The Polar Bears took a 5-3 lead into the final frame.
  • Muskingum led 2-0 after two innings. Allen hit a home run in the first inning and freshman Patrick McGinty scored on a wild pitch in the second inning.
  • The Polar Bears answered the Muskie fast start by scoring the next five runs. 
  • Shumar had a pair of hits for the Muskies, with one RBI.
  • McGinty went 3-for-4 with a triple and run scored.
  • Lynn went 2-for-3, with a walk.
  • Freshman Evan Hinds (5-2) suffered the loss after tossing six innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on 10 hits.
  • Devin Carr (2-2) earned the win after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits.
