Baseball splits with JCU to end its season

The Muskingum baseball team split their final doubleheader of the season against John Carroll on Saturday afternoon at Mose Morehead Field. The Muskies won the opener 9-4 and fell in the nightcap, 7-4.

In the opener, the Muskies were led by junior Brett Robberts and sophomore Dallas Allen as they both went 3-for-4. Sophomore Austin DeVore slammed a triple to left center and junior Christian Leitenberger doubled down the left field line to add to the Muskies' total.

Sophomore Derrick Barker (2-3) started the game and recorded the win pitching nine strong innings. He allowed four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Muskingum took an early 6-3 lead over the Blue Streaks in the third inning. With bases loaded and no outs, freshman Vayden Wood singled to right center scoring sophomore Dallas Allen. DeVore scored on a Robberts' sac fly to right field and Leitenberger brought in two runners with a double down the left field line.

Brandon Maddern (4-3) started the game and recorded the loss going three innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on six hits with two strikeouts. Aaron Lapaglia finished the last five innings giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.

In game two, John Carroll's David Crowley started the game with a home run to right field scoring two and ended with three RBIs. Rob Cifelli and Tyler Gentile recorded a double a piece to add to the Blue Streaks' total.

Andrew Doring (10-0) grabbed the win pitching eight innings giving up one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts. Jake Servidio pitched one inning giving up three runs (two earned).

Muskingum was led by Wood as he went 3-for-4 and racked up one RBI. DeVore went 2-for-4 recording two RBIs with his double to left center in the bottom of the ninth.

Freshman Kyle Schmitgen (3-3) started the game and recorded the loss pitching six innings giving up seven runs (five earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout. Junior Tyler Keith finished the last two innings giving up no runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

The split ends the Muskies' season with an overall record of 12-25 and a 5-13 mark in the OAC. In 2016, Muskingum will return its entire roster.
