Baseball splits twinbill with rival Marietta

The Muskingum baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference twinbill against rival Marietta on Saturday afternoon at Mose Morehead Field. The Muskies won the opener in 15 innings 2-1 and fell in the nightcap, 8-1.

In the opener, sophomore Matt Lynn delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 15th inning to score freshman Kyle Schmitgen. Schmitgen opened the bottom of the frame with a single through the right side and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore A.J. Kazmierczak then walked and sophomore Dallas Allen sacrificed Schmitgen and Allen to second and third to set up the walk-off single by Lynn.

Sophomore Derrick Barker started the game and fired a career-high 11 innings and allowed one run on seven hits with two strikeouts. Over his last two outing, Barker has tossed 21 outstanding innings and allowed just one run on 13 hits with five strikeouts. 

Schmitgen tossed the final four innings of no-hit ball to grab the win to move to 2-2 on the season. He also moved into the batting order in the 14th inning and scored the winning run in the 15th.

Muskingum took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on junior Brett Robberts' sacrifice fly to score junior Christian Leitenberger. Leitenberger led the team with three hits.

Marietta (12-9, 3-3) tied the contest in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Christian Demko.

Christian Herstine started the game and went nine innings and allowed one run on six hits with six strikeouts. Mitch McNabb (1-1) took the loss after going the final 1.1 innings and allowing one run on three hits.

In game two, Marietta's Tommy Crowl and Mike Fulton combined to throw a one-hitter to hold the Muskie hitters at bay. Crowl went eight strong innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit to improve to 4-1. Fulton pitched a hitless ninth. 

The Pioneers scored four runs in the top of the first on three hits to grab the momentum. Marietta then added a run in the third and three in the fourth to complete its scoring.

Muskingum scored its lone tally in the bottom of fourth on Allen's sacrifice fly that scored Leitenberger. Robberts had Muskingum's only hit.

Sophomore Dillon McDermott (0-4)  started the game and didn't make it out of the first inning. He lasted 0.2 innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits with three walks.

Muskingum next plays at Pitt-Greensburg on Monday, April 6. The first pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 2:00 p.m.
