VanDine pitches Muskies to a DH split

Senior Alex VanDine fired a complete game seven-hitter to lead the Muskingum baseball team to a game two win (4-2) against Ohio Northern on Saturday. The Polar Bears won the opener 4-1.

VanDine was in complete control for all nine innings. He recorded six strikeouts and allowed two runs en eroute to registering his team-best fourth win of the season.

The Muskies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first after senior Will Simpson scored on an Ohio Northern error.

Muskingum added a pair of runs in the second to stretch its lead to 3-0. Simpson's 2-run single scored senior Michael Lynn and sophomore Christian Leitenberger.

Ohio Northern (18-7, 6-4) trimmed its deficit to 3-1 in the third inning with an RBI single by Nick Eltzorth.

Simpson added his third RBI of the game on a bases loaded walk in the third bottom of the third to complete the Muskie scoring.

The Polar Bears added their final tally in the sixth on Dan Belliveau's RBI double.

The Muskies ended the game with six hits, with Simpson accounting for two of them.

Ben Glischinski suffered the loss after lasting 2.2 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits with five walks.

In the opener, Zach Maier held the Muskies at bay tossing a complete game six-hitter with one unearned run and two strikeouts. The win was the third of the season for Maier.

Ohio Northern used a three-run eighth to extend its lead to 4-0 heading into the final frame. The Polar Bear scoring was aided by a wild pitch and by RBIs from Eltzroth and Jack LaMarca.

The Muskies plated their lone run in the bottom of the ninth on Leitenberger's RBI single. Muskingum had the game-tying run at the plate when the final out was recorded.

Austin Miller took the defeat after pitching eight innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts. Miller's strong performance, coupled with the Muskie defensive effort, snapped Belliveau's 24-game hitting streak.

Brady Foley led the Polar Bears going 3-for-3 with an RBI and run.

Muskingum (10-13, 5-5) hits the field next on Tuesday, April 15 at Mount Union. Game one of the slated twinbill is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
