Women’s Basketball drops overtime thriller to John Carroll

The Muskingum women's basketball team used a fourth-quarter comeback that fell short Saturday evening as John Carroll knocked off the Muskies in overtime, 72-61.

How it Happened

  • After trailing 45-39, heading into the final the period, the Muskies used 7-0 run to gain a 47-45 advantage over John Carroll with 5:57 left in the contest.
  • The final minutes of the game saw the Muskies and Blue Streaks exchange baskets but, it would be John Carroll who jumped ahead 57-55 with 1:00 remaining off a layup from Maddie Pietrowski.
  • A layup from Caitlyn DeMassimo would even the score, 57-57 with 39 seconds remaining. The clutch layup from DeMassimo would be the last basket scored in regulation.
  • John Carroll used a 15-4 surge in overtime to escape New Concord with the win.

Notables

  • Sophomore Halle Morehead notched a career-high 16 points to help guide the Muskingum scoring effort.

  • Morehead finished the night firing 5-of-9 (55.6%) from the floor and 4-of-7 (57.1%) from behind the arc. She also tallied a team-high four assists and four steals.
  • Sophomore Caitlyn DeMassimo added 12 points and hauled in a team-high eight rebounds, while freshman Anna Lippiatt notched nine points and four rebounds coming off the bench for Muskingum.
  • Freshman Tori Jones recorded eight points, while freshman Lizzy Allen chipped in seven points and two steals.
  • Halle Landies recorded a game-high 20 points to guide the John Carroll offense.
  • As a team, Muskingum shot 24-of-64 (37.5%) from the floor, while John Carroll finished 25-of-64 (39.1%) from the field.
  • The Blue Streaks shot 11-of-24 (45.8%) from behind the arc, while Muskingum went 7-of-23 (30.4%) from three-point-range.
  • Muskingum saw their bench contribute 17 points compared to eight points from the Blue Streaks second unit.
