Softball earns shutout sweep against Baldwin Wallace

The Muskingum softball team earned a pair of shutout victories in its OAC doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace at Donna J. Newberry Field on Saturday afternoon. The Muskies won the opener 8-0 and secured a 9-0 nightcap victory to complete the sweep.

Records: Muskingum (20-8 Overall, 5-3 OAC), Baldwin Wallace (16-14 Overall, 4-6 OAC)

Notables

  • The Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader between Muskingum and Baldwin Wallace marked its Strikeout Cancer game. Players from both teams wore ribbon colors of their own to represent friends and family that are currently battling, survived, or who have passed from cancer.
  • The contest also was Muskingum's Youth Day game. All children 12 and under were invited to run the bases in between the doubleheader.
  • The doubleheader sweep against the Yellow Jackets marked Muskingum's 20th win of the season. 

How it Happened – Game 1

  • Muskingum plated four runs off three hits in the third inning. A Haley Hawk sacrifice fly to center plated the first run of the contest. An RBI single to shortstop from Cara Taylor, a double to center field from Taylor Stemmerding, and a Yellow Jacket throwing error added three more runs to the Muskie lead making it, 4-0.
  • Muskingum extended its lead 7-0 off a Yellow Jacket throwing error, an RBI ground out to second from Lynsey Dudley, and an RBI single to right field from Claire Guilliams.
  • The Muskies ended the contest off a double to left center from Cara Taylor in the sixth to claim the 8-0 victory. 

Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Muskingum plated eight runs off seven hits.
  • Senior Hannah Smith tossed 6.0 shutout innings and only surrendered three hits. Smith fired eight strikeouts en route to earning her 12th win of the season. 
  • Freshman Cara Taylor led the Muskies at the plate going 4-for-4 smacking two doubles, two runs scored, and knocked in two RBIs.
  • Freshman Taylor Stemmerding finished with a hit, two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Senior Claire Guilliams added one hit, a run scored, and an RBI, while junior Kalie Eshleman added a run score and hit.
  • Sophomore Lynsey Dudley added an RBI to the contest as well.
  • Emily Mau, Marcaira Fox, and Steph Mraz led Baldwin Wallace with one hit apiece.

How it Happened – Game 2

  • Muskingum erupted for six runs in the opening inning to take an early, 6-0 lead.
  • The Muskies made it 7-0 after four innings off a sacrifice fly from Sadie Smith.
  • Muskingum's final runs of the contest came in the fourth off a Taylor Gallentine RBI single down the left field line and a Taylor Stemmerding sacrifice fly to secure the 9-0 victory. 

Inside the Numbers – Game 2

  • Muskingum plated nine runs off eight hits.
  • Junior Madelyn Thomas earned her eighth win of the season after tallying three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. 
  • Junior Rosie Hayes led the Muskies at the dish going 2-for-2 and two runs scored.
  • Taylor Stemmerding added one hit, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
  • Senior Taylor Gallentine added a hit and an RBI, while Cara Taylor also added a hit, a run scored, and an RBI.
  • Senior Carlee Lamacz added two hits and a run scored, while Kalie Eshelman notched a hit and two runs scored.
  • Steph Mraz led Baldwin Wallace with two hits.

  • Muskingum is back in action on Wednesday, April 19, when they travel to take on OAC-foe Marietta. First-pitch of the OAC doubleheader is set for a 3PM start at Marietta Field.
