Softball earns electrifying split over #3 Trine 

The Muskingum softball team earned an electrifying split with third-ranked Trine on Thursday evening. The Muskies used 14 hits including two home runs en route to a thrilling 8-7 victory, before dropping the night cap, 5-1.

 The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (17-5 Overall), Trine (17-3 Overall)
  • Location: SportONE/Parkview – Angola, Ind.

How it Happened – Game 1

  • Sarah Piteo and Haley Hawk sparked a three-run, two-out rally for the Muskies in the first to take an early, 3-0 lead. Piteo notched a two-run home run to left center, while Hawk smacked an RBI double to right center.
  • Trine retaliated with a two-out rally of their own notching four runs off two hits taking a 4-3 lead.
  • The Thunder added their fifth run of the contest in the second of a double to left field.
  • A Kalie Eshelman solo blast to center field and a Carlee Lamacz RBI single through the right side evened the game, 5-5.
  • Muskingum extended their score in the sixth with back-to-back two-out singles from Lamacz and Taylor Gallentine to pull ahead 8-5.
  • The Thunder's final two runs of the game came off a solo home run and a Muskie throwing error. Trine was unable to plate the final run in the seventh as three ground outs to the Muskingum defense closed out the game and secured the Muskingum, 8-7 game one victory.

Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Muskingum plated eight runs off 14 hits, while also leaving 11 on base.
  • Senior Hannah Smith ended the outing allowing seven runs off four hits and fired five strikeouts to improve to 11-0 on the season.
  • Senior Carlee Lamacz led the Muskies finishing 3-for-4 at the plate and tallied two RBIs.
  • Freshman Cara Taylor finished 3-for-4 and had three runs scored.
  • Junior Kalie Eshelman also finished with three hits, which included a home run, and three runs scored, while senior Taylor Gallentine notched two hits and an RBI.
  • Senior Sarah Piteo had a home run and two RBIs.
  • Senior Haley Hawk and freshman Kaitlyn Bibb both chipped in one hit apiece. Hawk added an RBI as well.
  • Trine was led by Karley Trine who tallied two hits and two RBIs. 

How it Happened – Game 2

  • Trine plated the first run of the contest off a single up the middle to jump ahead 1-0.
  • The Muskies knotted the score 1-1, off a Cara Taylor single up the middle.
  • The Thunder used a two-hit, four-run six inning to make it the final 5-1 and secure the doubleheader split. 

 Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum scored one run off eight hits and left eight runners on base.
  • Junior Madelyn Thomas pitched 6.0 innings and struck out three while she surrendered five runs off six hits.
  • Cara Taylor led the Muskingum bats with a 2-for-2 performance at the plate and an RBI.
  • Carlee Lamacz also finished with two hits.
  • Senior Claire Guilliams, Sarah Piteo, and Haley Hawk all finished with one hit apiece.
  • Trine was led by Amanda Prather had two hits and an RBI.
