Men’s Lacrosse caps off season with thrilling win over Marietta

The Muskingum men's lacrosse team broke numerous program records en route to defeating OAC-rival Marietta 13-9 to cap off its 2023 season.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (7-9 Overall, 3-6 OAC), Marietta (5-10 Overall, 3-6 OAC)
  • Location: Bullock Health and Wellness Complex – New Concord, Ohio

Notables

  • With the win, the Muskies finish tied for sixth in the OAC standings and narrowly miss out on a berth in the OAC Tournament based on goal differential among the tied teams.
  • Junior Spencer Zecchini tallied a season-high seven goals to lead Muskingum to victory.
  • Zecchini also moved into first place all-time in career goals in program history with 90.
  • Zecchini also fell one goal short of tying the single-season goals record with 36 this year. Zecchini holds the current record of 37 which was set in 2022.
  • Zecchini is now the program record holder for all time points as well. Zecchini currently has 139 career points, shattering the previous record of 110 set by Tucker Haas from 2015-19.
  • Muskingum also set the single-season program record for face off percentage with a team total of 219-for-369 (.594).
  • Sophomore Drew Schneider broke his own school record with 138 ground balls in a single season. Schneider held the previous single-season record with 130 ground balls last year.
  • Schneider also set the program record for most face-offs won win a single campaign with 205. This breaks his previous record of 170 set in 2022.
  • Schneider also broke the program record for all time ground balls with 268 in just his first two seasons. This breaks the record of 246 set by Tucker Haas from 2015-19.

How it Happened

  • Neither team could pull away early on as the score was deadlocked at two apiece following the first frame.
  • In the second quarter, Muskingum jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but Marietta managed to trim the Muskie lead down to one at 5-4 heading into the halftime break.
  • In the third quarter, Muskingum outscored the Pioneers 4-3 to build a two goal lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The fourth quarter was controlled by Muskingum as the Muskies outscored Marietta 4-2 to secure the 13-9 win. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum was led by junior Spencer Zecchini who tallied a season-high seven goals. Zecchini also caused two turnovers and picked up six ground balls for Muskingum as well.
  • Junior Grant Webster tallied two goals and dished out one assist for Muskingum, while junior Hunter McGuire registered one goal and one assist.
  • Freshman Jack Peyton finished with one goal and a caused turnover for the Muskies, while sophomore Drew Davis finished with one goal and two assists.
  • Junior Travis Geyer also notched one goal, while senior Maxwell Pezzot dished out two assists for Muskingum.
  • Sophomore Drew Schneider led the Muskies with 10 ground balls, while junior goalie Trevor Connolly tallied six saves and five ground balls.
  • Marietta was led by Colton Abate with three goals.
