Muskingum to host OAC Men's Golf Championships

Muskingum to host OAC Men's Golf Championships

Muskingum will host the 2024 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Men's Golf Championship from Friday, April 26, to Sunday, April 28, at River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio. The event will be 72 holes, with the top-14 finishers, including ties, receiving All-OAC honors. Tee times begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday (27 holes), 9:00 a.m. on Saturday (27 holes), and 9:00 a.m. on Sunday (18 holes).

Last year, Otterbein reclaimed its throne after losing to John Carroll in 2022, when the Blue Streaks snapped Otterbein's previous run of six-straight OAC titles. The Cardinals led by six shots after the first round, 14 after the second full round, and 18 entering championship Sunday. Otterbein (1,167) finished 25 shots clear of runner-up Capital (1,192) and has won 20 of the last 25 OAC titles. Rounding out the top five were Mount Union (1,205), Ohio Northern (1,212), and Muskingum (1,214).

Capital's Angelo Donato earned medalist honors after defeating Otterbein's Ian Johnston and Muskingum's Cameron Henry in a playoff. All three golfers finished with a 72-hole score of 289.

Otterbein is led by sophomore twins Ian and Jake Morgan, who claimed first and second place in the OAC spring preview at River Greens, finishing with scores of 69 and 70. Senior Ian Johnston and sophomore Carter Woodward both shot 71s and were part of a five-way tie for third place. In last year's OAC championship, Johnston and Woodward finished in the top five.

John Carroll, finishing sixth in last year's championship, has found success this season and has finished right behind first place Otterbein in both OAC previews this season. Seniors Zach Brinks and Jacob Hazen were part of the five-way tie for third place at the spring preview, finishing with scores of 71. The freshmen trio of Austin Malley, Kamden Mowry, and Wade Boyle have also had impressive showings for the Blue Streaks in their first season and will look to help pace the team in this weekend's championship.

Capital will look to senior Ben Satterthwaite, freshman Keegan Billingham and senior Jack Curtis, all having strong showings at the recent OAC spring preview. Satterthwaite shot a 73, while Billingham and Curtis both shot 76's. Earlier this season at the Pioneer Classic, Billingham earned medalist honors after beating Satterthwaite in a playoff hole. The pair both shot the second-lowest 36-hole in school history, scoring a two-round total of 140. Billingham broke the program's 18-hole record with a 66 in the second round.

Muskingum placed third in the OAC spring preview with a score of 301, led by senior Nick Congrove (72), senior Cameron Henry (73), and freshman David Link Jr. (75). In last year's OAC Championship, Congrove was part of the three-way tie for first place, finishing with a 72-hole score of 289. Congrove tied for sixth place with a score of 293.

Mount Union is led by freshman standout Brian Meyers, who recently earned his first career medalist honors at the Dan Caschera Classic. In the OAC spring preview, the Purple Raiders finished with a team score of 302, just one stroke behind Muskingum. Meyers led the team and tied for eighth place with a score of 72, while sophomore Logan McCarrell finished a shot behind at 73. In last year's OAC championship, senior Ian Smith tied for sixth with a score of 293 and is back again this year as a graduate senior.

The Ohio Northern men's golf team broke the school's 36-hole record with a 26-over par 287-299—586 to finish sixth at the DePauw Spring Clash last weekend. The Polar Bears will look to improve upon its fourth-place finish a year ago with the help of freshman Aashir Patel and sophomore Bennett Christy, who led the team at the DePauw Spring Clash, with scores of 143 and 144.

Baldwin Wallace is led by senior Ryan Green, who shot a 73 at the OAC spring preview. Also pacing the way for the Yellow Jackets are juniors Logan Cook and Christian Miller, who had two-round totals of 173 and 174 at the Dan Cashera Classic last weekend.

Heidelberg freshman Emerson Grassbaugh has had an impressive season, shooting a 73 at the OAC spring preview and recently earning medalist honors at Pine Hills Golf Club, winning the event by five strokes (73).  At the Otterbein Tax Bracket Bonanza, Grassbaugh led the team with a 78, and seniors Chace Boothman and Connor Van Skyock both shot an 80.

Marietta will look to senior Nick Weideling who was the top finisher for the team at the OAC spring preview, shooting a 75. Freshman Andrew Korner finished right behind with a 76, and Freshman Mason Reville with a 77. In the Marietta Fall Classic, the team finished third in the 36-hole tournament (593). Weideling tied for third with a four-over-par score of 144.
