Baseball wins second game against Asbury in dramatic fashion

The Muskingum baseball team completed the sweep over Asbury after winning today's contest 12-11. The win came following a series of impeccable plays made late in the lengthy game that showed the Muskies refused to waiver in the heated bout.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (19-17 overall), Asbury (20-17 overall)
  • Location: Mose Morehead Field - New Concord, Ohio
  • Attendance: 94

How It Ended

  • The Muskies found a rhythm late in the game as they recorded eight runs in their last three innings.
  • Following a four run eighth inning, the Muskies were attempting to close things out in the top of the ninth.
  • A rowdy Asbury team wouldn't give in though as they loaded the bases with one out.
  • The hot bat of Asbury's Quinn Nobles would come to the plate. Nobles had already launched a double, triple, and home run in the contest.
  • This didn't effect sophomore Nathan Johnson, who under all this pressure proceeded to strike out Nobles.
  • Now with two outs and the bases still loaded the next batter snuck a hit into shallow right field. With one run scoring from third base on the hit, the Asbury coach waived the next base runner and tying run home.
  • Freshman right fielder Aiden Reis heard the call for home and delivered a strike to the plate right on time as freshman catcher Benny Hess found the diving Asbury base runner and the game was over.

Inside The Numbers

  • Muskingum scorched the scoreboard with 12 runs on 19 hits with only one error.
  • The dynamite offense was led by the duo of junior Travis Reynolds and junior Weston Melick. Both sparked the offense with three hits. Reynolds added in one RBI and three scored runs, while Melick added in two scored runs.
  • Following up in the dynamic offense was senior Wyatt Reeder and Reis who each got involved in multiple categories. Reeder finished with two hits, three RBI's, and a scored run. Reis ended the contest with two hits, two RBI's, and one run scored.
  • The bats just kept ringing as senior Gavin Hawk and junior Tobie Teke got their fair share. Hawk went out and got two hits and one RBI. Teke threw in two hits and two runs scored.
  • B. Hess ignited things upon entry to the game with a hit, RBI, and run scored.
  • Freshman Conner Thamann added a hit and two runs scored.
  • Senior Ryan Schwartz and sophomore Sam Palmieri finished with one hit and one RBI.
  • Sophomore Louie Hess rounded out the Muskies with one hit.
  • Sophomore Sheadon Sullivan got the start for the Muskies on the mound and went four innings while striking out two batters.
  • A combination of pitchers got the Muskies to the end of the game. This group consisted of sophomore Lane Goetz, freshman Luke Spencer, and sophomore Dane Sparks. They worked through 3.2 innings before senior Peyton Carr took over and handled 0.2 innings late in the game. Carr earned the win as he finished off the eighth inning and the Muskies took the lead in the bottom of the eighth.
  • N. Johnson came in for the last two outs and earned his fourth save of the year. He struck out one of the two batters he faced.
