Baseball falls vs. Hiram

The Muskingum baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Hiram on Sunday. The Muskies fell in extra innings in game one 4-3, and dropped game two, 16-7.

The Basics

Game 1

How it Happened

  • After Hiram scored two runs in the first three innings, Muskingum found the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning off a sacrifice fly from senior Trey Yoder. Yoder's RBI trimmed the Hiram lead down to 2-1.
  • Hiram picked up another run in the fourth inning, but the Muskies answered back with a run in the sixth inning off an RBI single from sophomore Gavin Hawk.
  • With the game only scheduled for seven regulation innings, senior Chayce Lundell stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and delivered a clutch game-tying RBI single to bring the score to three apiece.
  • Despite having the winning run at third base, still with two outs in the seventh, the Muskies were unable to continue the rally.
  • Hiram managed to score one run in the top of the eighth inning to recapture a 4-3 lead, but Muskingum threatened in the bottom half of the inning with a runner on third with one out.
  • Despite the runner in scoring position, Muskingum was unable to capitalize and Hiram held on for the 4-3 win.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Muskies were led by junior Dominic Gorence who finished 3-for-4 on the day.
  • Junior Devin Ryan went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while senior Chayce Lundell finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Sophomore Nate Keiser tallied a 1-for-2 line with a run scored, while sophomore Gavin Hawk delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to finish 1-for-1 on the day.
  • Sophomore Noah Moser started on the mound for Muskingum and pitched five innings. Moser gave up three earned runs and struck out two Hiram batters.
  • Sophomore Clark Jennings pitched in relief for Muskingum. Jennings tossed three innings and gave up one earned run.

 

Game 2

How it Happened

  • Muskingum first got on the board in the first inning off an RBI single from sophomore Gavin Hawk.
  • Still in the first inning, junior Allex Santacroce delivered an RBI ground out to second base to score Muskingum's second run of game two.
  • In the second inning, senior Trey Yoder tallied a two-run homer to right field. Yoder's home run was his first of the season, and also drove in junior Devin Ryan.
  • The Muskies found the scoreboard again in the third inning when Hawk drove a solo home run to right field. Hawk's solo blast was his second of the season.
  • In the sixth inning, junior Dominic Gorence scored Muskingum's last two runs when he drilled a two-run single up the middle of the infield to drive in Ryan and sophomore Nate Keiser.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Muskies were led by senior Trey Yoder who finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
  • Sophomore Gavin Hawk finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's and one run scored, while junior Dominic Gorence went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored.
  • Junior Allex Santacroce batted 2-for-3 with an RBI, and junior Devin Ryan finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
  • Freshman Brock Pfister started game two on the mound for Muskingum. Pfister pitched one and one-third innings, and gave up six earned runs.
  • Senior Drew Eaches, sophomore Liam Carey, and freshman Dayton Hill all pitched in relief for the Muskies.
