Baseball finishes 7-2 at the Gene Cusic Classic

Saturday, March 12 - The Muskingum baseball team dominated Haverford 21-9 on Saturday to finish 7-2 at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

Sophomore Quinten Collins led the potent Muskie offense with a 3-for-4 effort including a grand slam, a solo homer, a double, and five RBI's. Senior Devin Ryan batted 3-for-5 with a solo home run, three runs scored, and two RBI's for the Muskies. Senior Trey Yoder also batted 3-for-5, and he finished with three runs scored, two doubles, and one RBI. Junior Dominic Gorence went 2-for-4 from the plate with three runs scored and an RBI, while sophomore Gavin Hawk finished 2-for-3 with two RBI's, one run scored, and one double.

Sophomore Clark Jennings earned his second win of the season pitching five innings in relief and giving up two earned runs. Sophomore Liam Carey earned his second save of the year, throwing three scoreless innings to close out the game for Muskingum. After finishing 7-2 on the week, the Muskies sit at 7-3 on the season. Muskingum will be back in action again on Wednesday when they travel to take on Oberlin. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.

 

Friday, March 11 - The Muskingum baseball team split a doubleheader versus St. Elizabeth at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Muskies took game one 4-0 and dropped game two 7-2.

In game one, the Muskies were led by senior Jake Norris who pitched a complete game shutout. Norris recorded four strikeouts and only gave up four hits en route to his second win of the season. The Muskies also got contributions on offense from sophomore Quinten Collins who finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Senior Chayce Lundell recorded an RBI for the Muskies on a bases loaded hit by pitch. Junior Allex Santacroce, junior Dominic Gorence, sophomore Nate Keiser, freshman Austin Lippolis, and freshman Tobie Teke also recorded one hit each for Muskingum.

Game two saw Muskingum jump out to an early lead off a double from Gorence that scored two runners. However, the Muskies were unable to find the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, and dropped the contest 7-2. Sophomore Jaxon Rinkes pitched seven innings, recording two strikeouts and yielding seven earned runs.

The Muskies will wrap up their Florida trip tomorrow when they battle Haverford at 9:00 a.m.

 

Thursday, March 10 - The Muskingum baseball team dominated Bluffton 16-2 at the Gene Cusic Classic. With the win, the Muskies improve to 5-2 overall, their best start to a season since the 2016 campaign.

Freshman Austin Lippolis threw six dominant innings on the mound, only giving up one earned run and recording his first career win for the Muskies. Freshman Brock Pfister threw three scoreless innings in relief to record his first career save as well.

Along with dominant pitching, the Muskies were led by junior Allex Santacroce who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Junior Devin Ryan finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while senior Trey Yoder went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Dominic Gorence finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Chayce Lundell, sophomore Quinten Collins, sophomore Nate Keiser, sophomore Brice Shaub, and freshman Travis Reynolds each recorded a hit for the Muskies.

 

Wednesday, March 9 - The Muskingum baseball team nailed down a pair of wins over Hiram on Wednesday. The Muskies won game one 2-0, and game two 5-1.

In game one, the Muskies were led by senior Trey Yoder who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Junior Devin Ryan, junior Dominic Gorence, sophomore Quinten Collins, and sophomore Nate Keiser each recorded one hit apiece for Muskingum. Sophomore Erik Cover pitched a complete-game shutout to earn his first win of the season. Cover threw four strikeouts and only walked one batter.

Game two saw the Muskies fall behind 1-0 in the first inning. However, Muskingum was able to rally and put up four runs in the fourth inning, and one run in the fifth inning to secure the victory. The Muskies were led by sophomore Nate Keiser and freshman Wyatt Reeder who both finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs each. Sophomore Gavin Hawk also went 1-for-3 on the game with one RBI. Sophomore Noah Moser pitched four innings, giving up one run and recording three strikeouts for the Muskies. Moser earned his first win of the season, while sophomore Liam Carey pitched three scoreless innings out of the Muskie bullpen to record his first save of the year.

 

Tuesday, March 8 - The Muskies dominated Rockford 14-3 on day three of the Gene Cusic Classic.

The Muskies were led by junior Devin Ryan who went 4-for-4 on the day with three doubles, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Junior Allex Santacroce went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBIs and two runs scored, while junior Dominic Gorence went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Sophomore Nate Keiser finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Senior Chayce Lundell went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior Drew Eaches pitched four and two-thirds innings and gave up three runs. Sophomore Clark Jennings picked up his first career win, pitching three and one-third shutout innings.

 

Monday, March 7 - The Muskingum baseball team dropped their contest with Saint John's (Minn.) 6-3 at the Gene Cusic Classic on Monday.

The Muskies were led by sophomore Wyatt Reeder who went 2-for-3 with an RBI on the day. Sophomore Nate Keiser went 1-for-2, while also tallying an RBI and a run scored. Senior Chayce Lundell registered an RBI for the Muskies, while junior Dominic Gorence and sophomore Quinten Collins both notched one run scored. Sophomore Jaxon Rinkes gave up two earned runs and struck out three batters in five innings of work for Muskingum.

 

Sunday, March 6 – The Muskies earned their first win of the season in the opening game of the Gene Cusic Classic on Sunday. Muskingum defeated Alvernia 5-0 behind senior Jake Norris' seven shutout innings.

Norris scattered seven hits and notched three strikeouts in his season debut on the mound. The Muskies were led by senior Trey Yoder, who went 3-for-4 and tallied an RBI. Yoder also led the team with a stolen base. Sophomore Quinten Collins went 2-for-3 with two doubles, and junior Dominic Gorence tallied two RBIs off one double. Senior Chayce Lundell and sophomore Nate Keiser each added one RBI apiece. Sophomore Erik Cover pitched two scoreless innings in relief to secure the win for Muskingum.
