#FlashBackFriday - Honoring Muskingum championships, All-Americans and Hall of Fame members

In 1999, the Muskingum volleyball team ended the season 40-4 overall and 8-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Muskies won the OAC Regular Season and OAC Tournament championships and won the NCAA Great Lakes Regional championship en route to finishing third in the NCAA Tournament.

The championship team featured junior setter Kristen Vejsicky, senior outside hitter Annie Rome, sophomore outside hitter/defensive specialist Kelly Krueger, sophomore defensive specialist Jenny Woodruff, freshman outside hitter Tara Hannahs, sophomore middle hitter Ashley Layman, freshman outside hitter Leslie Goins, freshman outside hitter Amanda Montano, senior middle hitter Kerry Gilligan, senior defensive specialist Anne Smith, senior middle hitter Lindsay Larrick, Head Coach Dr. Elizabeth "Bea" Zicha, Assistant Coach Christie McGee, and Assistant Coach Steve Ashby.

The 40 wins by the squad rank second all-time in program history. Following the season, Coach Zicha was named OAC Coach of the Year and Tachikara/AVCA Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year. Annie Rome was named OAC Player of the Year and received Second Team All-American accolades. Vejsicky was named First Team All-OAC, Larrick was named Second Team All-OAC, and Layman was named Honorable Mention All-OAC. Following the regional play, Rome, Vejsicky, and Layman were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region team.

The Muskies also excelled in the classroom as Smith, Rome, and Vejsicky were named First Team Academic All-OAC, and Gilligan, Larrick, and Layman were named Second Team Academic All-OAC.

Today, three members of the 1999 championship team are in the Muskingum Hall of Fame - Layman, Rome, and Vejsicky. 

Notables

  • The 1999 season marked the eighth time that Muskingum has participated in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Muskingum's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament was in 1988, and the 1999 appearance marked the first time the Muskies had advanced to the NCAA semifinals/finals.
  • Head Coach Dr. Elizabeth "Bea" Zicha began the 1999 campaign ranked 14th among active Division III coaches in winning percentage and 19th in the same grouping in terms of wins.
  • Muskingum opened the year with 16 straight wins, which included 14 straight-set victories. 
  • Muskingum carried a 10-match winning streak into the Final Four.
