Wrestling ready to take on new season

The Muskingum wrestling team, led by head coach Zach Mizer in his fifth season, are primed and ready to compete in the upcoming 2019-20 season.

Coach Mizer returns a number upperclassmen filled with quality and leadership along with a talented recruiting class that are ready to make their mark this season.

Returning for the Muskie squad are senior Michael Kashuba, senior Cody Jenkins, senior Sammy Southers, junior Garrett Mitchel, sophomore Carter Layton, and sophomore Cooper Hemming who are ready to lead the team in the new campaign.

Kashuba competed in seven matches last season in the 174 weight class, but will compete in the 165 weight class for the Muskies this season, while Jenkins will compete in the 197/285 weight class this season after competing in 13 matches in the 285 division last year.

Southers won nine matches last season in the 141 weight class for Muskingum and will move down to the 133 weight class this season, and Layton will compete in the 174 weight class for the Muskies again this season after competing in 20 matches in the same weight class a season a go.

Hemming won four overall contests last year in the 141 weight class and will compete in same weight class again, while Mitchel won five matches in the 197 weight class last season and will once again compete in the same weight class.

The Muskies begin the new season on Saturday, November 9 at the Washington and Jefferson Invite at 10:00 a.m. and will start OAC action at the Mount Union Dual on Tuesday, November 19 starting at 7:00 p.m. Their first home match will be on Tuesday, December 3 when they host John Carroll at 7:00 p.m.
