Softball sweeps Heidelberg in doubleheader action

The Muskingum softball team swept OAC opponent Heidelberg on Sunday afternoon in doubleheader action. Muskingum won the opener 5-4, and shutout the Student Princes in game two, 6-0.

  • Records: Muskingum (20-6 Overall, 6-2 OAC), Heidelberg (14-6 Overall, 3-5 OAC)

Game One

How it Happened 

  • Muskingum took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first.
  • Heidelberg struck back with a three-run home run from Emma Dean.
  • A Hawk two-run home run in the third inning evened the score at three.
  • The Muskies plated runs in the fourth and sixth inning, while Heidelberg plated their final run in the sixth.
  • Muskingum went into the seventh with a 5-4 advantage.
  • Heidelberg threatened in the seventh with runners on first and second with no outs, and with bases loaded with two outs, but were unable to plate the game-tying run.
  • Muskingum secured the game one victory, 5-4.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum scored five runs off seven hits.
  • Senior Hannah Smith earned her 11th win in the circle tossing a complete game and firing six strikeouts.
  • Senior Haley Hawk led the Muskingum bats going 2-for-2 at the plate, which included a two-run home run.
  • Junior Claire Warschauer collected an RBI double.
  • Senior Katie Osburn, junior Taylor Gallentine, sophomore Kalie Eshelman, and sophomore Rosie Hayes finished with one hit apiece.
  • Emma Dean led the Student Prince offense with a hit and three RBIs.

Game Two

How it Happened

  • A Hawk two-RBI double down the left field line gave the Muskies a 2-0 lead.
  • Muskingum continued their hot bats in the second inning plating three runs off four hits.
  • The Muskies' final run came off an RBI single to right field from Piteo, to secure the Muskingum 6-0 victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Muskingum scored six runs on 11 hits.
  • Sophomore Madelyn Thomas tossed a complete game and fired six strikeouts.
  • Hawk led the Muskie bats going 2-for-4 at the plate and added two RBIs.
  • Senior Cristianna Boggs and Gallentine ended the game with two hits and an RBI apiece.
  • Junior Sarah Piteo and sophomore Rosie Hayes  finished with a hit and RBI.
  • Osburn and Eshelman added with one hit.
  • Gabbie Stallbaum, Megan Bame, and Ryann Ramacciatti led the Heidelberg offense tallying one hit apiece.

Muskingum is back in action on Wednesday, April 13, when they travel to take on Marietta in Ohio Athletic Conference action. Game one is set for 3:00 p.m., with game two to follow.
