Men's Lacrosse ready for strong season

The Muskingum men's lacrosse team, led by third-year head coach Alec Chisholm, are locked in and ready to take on the new 2020 campaign. Chisholm will have the luxury of 13 letterwinners returning, including nine starters from last season, and a strong recruiting class to help position Muskingum to make some noise in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Leading the Muskies this season will be junior Josh Fletcher, senior Nick Klinefelter, sophomore Hazen Powell, sophomore Drew Iarussi, sophomore Douglas Gorski, sophomore Spencer Durso, sophomore Luke Swartz, sophomore Zachary Westmeyer, and sophomore goalie Brandon Farley.

Fletcher, a first-year captain, started in all 16 games last season and had a record-setting year. He broke the record for most goals in a season (37), most assists in a season (21), and most points in a season (58). Fletcher was awarded All-OAC Honorable Mention honors and received OAC Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week accolades for his outstanding play.

Klinefelter played in all 16 games netting 17 goals, was second on the team in assists with 12, and ended the season with 29 points. Powell started in 14 games scoring 16 goals in his freshman season, dished out nine assists, earned 25 total points, and snatched 49 ground balls.

Iarussi started in all 16 games grabbing 22 ground balls and causing 12 turnovers, while Gorski played in all 16 games and led the team in ground balls grabbing 53.

Westmeyer played in all 16 games, scored 12 goals, and ended his freshman campaign with 14 points.

Durso played in 15 games for the Muskies and led the team in face-off wins with 81 and face-off win percentage with 41.5%. Swartz started in all 16 games scoring three goals, grabbed 39 ground balls, and caused a team-high 23 turnovers.

Farley started in 10 games between the pipes for Muskingum and ended his season with 104 saves while earning three wins and snatching 36 ground balls in his first season in net.

Also, adding depth and looking to make a presence this season are senior captain Thomas McCauley, sophomore Mason Kesler, sophomore Smith Hickenlooper, and sophomore Brock Hudgins.

The Muskies get their new season underway when they host Hilbert for their season and home opener on Saturday, February 22, at the North Athletic Turf Field. Game time is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start. Muskingum opens up OAC play at John Carroll on Saturday, March 21. The start time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
