Football travels to Capital for season-finale

The Muskingum football team travels to Ohio Athletic Conference foe Capital on Saturday, November 13. The season-finale contest is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Bernlohr Stadium.

The Series

  • The contest will mark the 70th meeting between Muskingum and Capital, with the first game being played in 1920. The Muskies lead the all-time series, 38-29-2.
  • Muskingum has set several school records against Capital throughout the series. In 2000, Jeremy Abney set the school record for the longest kickoff return for a touchdown when he returned one 98 yards against Capital. In 2003, Antwan Curry returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown against Capital, ranking third all-time at Muskingum. Marc Von Kaenel set the school mark for passing completions (32) and attempts (49) against Capital in 2001.

Notables

  • With a win, Muskingum will record its first five-win season since 2003 and have a chance to finish in the top half of the league for the first time since 2009.

The Matchup

The Muskies enter the contest at 4-5 overall and 3-5 in the OAC. Muskingum is averaging 317.2 yards and 23.7 points per game.

Muskingum is led by the captain quad of senior quarterback Jordan Garrett, senior defensive back Brian Brown, senior defensive back Cortez McGinnis, and senior offensive lineman Iggy Horvath.

Garrett leads the offense throwing for 1,841 yards and 13 touchdowns on 153-of-275 passing attempts. He's one passing touchdown shy of tying the school record of 14. Garrett has also rushed for 96 yards and five scores. Garrett ranks third all-time for passing yards in a season at Muskingum and is only 185 yards shy of the record. He also ranks seventh in total offense with 1,937 yards. Furthermore, Garrett ranks fifth in career passing yards with 3,178 and seventh in total offense with 3,578.

Junior running back Donny Wilkinson leads the rushing attack with 391 yards and three scores. Wilkinson has also hauled in 17 receptions for 112 yards.

Junior receiver Zuri Edmondson, sophomore receiver Travis Roberson, and junior receiver Ja'Lin Goodman pace the Muskie receiving core. Edmondson has 37 receptions for 558 yards and four touchdowns. He is only 47 receiving yards shy of cracking the top 10 all-time at Muskingum for receiving yards in a season. Roberson has 31 grabs for 2316 yards and three scores, and Goodman has hauled in 23 receptions for 393 yards and three touchdowns.

Sophomore tight end Gannon Unger also plays a pivotal role in the Muskie offense. Unger has rushed for 118 yards and one touchdown and caught 22 balls for 219 yards and two scores. He also has one passing touchdown. 

Defensively, the Muskies are allowing 396.6 yards and 31.4 points per contest. Muskingum ranks fourth in the OAC in defensive turnovers with 17 (nine interceptions, eight fumble recoveries).

Freshman linebacker Azarious Williams and senior defensive back Brian Brown lead the Muskie defense. Williams has notched 66 hits and six tackles for loss for 19 yards. Brown has 60 tackles and is tied for sixth all-time at Muskingum in career interceptions with 14. The freshmen defensive lineman Daniel Robinson has notched a team-best three sacks, while freshman linebacker Toleo Malone has recorded two.

Sophomore kicker Hunter Albers and sophomore punter Collin Scozzafava lead the Muskie special teams. Albers is 4-of-6 in field goals (long of 38 yards) and has made 27-of-29 extra-point attempts. Scozzafava is averaging 41.5 yards per punt and has placed 12 inside the 20. He connected on a career-best 70-yard punt against John Carroll earlier this season and logged 456 punt yards against Mount Union last week.

Capital enters the contest at 2-7 overall and 1-7 in the OAC. The Comets are averaging 282 yards and 17.8 points per outing. 

Sophomore quarterback Ben Everson leads the Capital offense. He has thrown for 848 yards and eight touchdowns on 57-of-114 passing. His top targets are the senior duo of Noah Meeker and Kameron Lee. Meeker has 19 grabs for 498 yards and three scores, while Lee has 30 receptions for 409 yards and three touchdowns.

Freshman Drew Engle and junior Lance Matthews pace the Capital ground game. Engle has rushed for 383 yards and two scores, and Matthews has rumbled for 205 yards.

The Comet defense is allowing 450.2 yards and 37.1 points per game. Junior Nick Fisanick and junior Mike Lauofo lead the defensive charge. Fisanick has racked up 62 stops, while Lauofo has 53 tackles.

Junior kicker Eric Noble has connected on 1-of-4 field goals with a long of 40 yards to pace special team play. Lee is averaging 37.6 yards per boot and has placed 12 inside the 20
