Muskingum University to launch varsity esports team

The Muskingum University Athletic Department announced today that it will launch esports as a new varsity intercollegiate sport during the 2019-20 academic year. The addition of esports brings the total number of varsity sport programs offered by the University to 22.

Esports, which involves teams representing their institutions in competitive online gaming through multiplayer matches, will be the first sport added at Muskingum since lacrosse was fielded in 2015. Muskingum plans on joining the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) which currently has a membership of over 125-plus schools. NACE is the only association of varsity esports programs at colleges and universities across the United States.

"I'm thrilled to expand the scope of Muskingum's varsity sport offerings to include esports," said Muskingum Vice President and Athletic Director Steve Brockelbank. "The opportunity to add one of the fastest-growing, innovative sports in the country is exciting. I'm looking forward to welcoming esport athletes to Muskingum's campus in the fall."

Muskingum is currently in the development stages for a planned on-campus gaming arena and is in the process of searching for a head coach to lead the esports program.
