Baseball splits doubleheader at Huntington Park

The Muskingum baseball team split a pair of games versus OAC-foe Capital at Huntington Park on Wednesday. The Muskies narrowly lost game one 5-4, and rebounded for a 2-1 win in game two.

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (13-16 Overall, 2-10 OAC), Capital (8-20 Overall, 1-9 OAC)
  • Location: Huntington Park – Columbus, Ohio

Notables

  • The doubleheader was held at Huntington Park, home of the Columbus Clippers. The Clippers are the AAA affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians MLB team.

Game 1

How it Happened

  • After Capital scored one run in the second inning to grab the early lead, Muskingum answered back with three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by junior Devin Ryan's two RBI single to center field, and an RBI single from senior Trey Yoder.
  • Muskingum struck again in the fifth inning, plating another run off a single from sophomore Peyton Carr that scored senior Chayce Lundell.
  • Despite the Muskies holding a 4-1 lead, Capital managed to score four runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-4 lead.
  • Neither team would allow another run for the remainder of the game, and Capital held on for the 5-4 victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Muskies were led by senior Trey Yoder who finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.
  • Junior Devin Ryan went 1-for-4 with two RBI's and a walk, while sophomore Peyton Carr batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk as well.
  • Junior Dominic Gorence finished 1-for-3 with a run scored, while junior Allex Santacroce finished 1-for-5 on the day.
  • Sophomore Noah Moser got the start on the mound for the Muskies. Moser pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs and striking out five Comets.

 

Game 2

How it Happened

  • Muskingum got on the board right out of the gates, scoring a run in the top of the first inning off an RBI double from senior Chayce Lundell.
  • Lundell's RBI hit would be the only run scored until the seventh inning when Muskingum found the scoreboard again. Junior Dominic Gorence belted an RBI double to score sophomore Peyton Carr and extend the Muskie lead to 2-0.
  • Capital managed to score one run in the bottom of the seventh, but senior Drew Eaches nailed down the save with runners at first and second in the ninth inning to secure Muskingum's 2-1 victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Muskies were led by junior Dominic Gorence who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Senior Chayce Lundell finished 1-for-4 with an RBI in game two, while sophomore Peyton Carr went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
  • Sophomore Quinten Collins collected a 1-for-3 effort from the plate, while senior Trey Yoder finished with a run scored.
  • Freshman Austin Lippolis pitch six dominate innings for the Muskies in game two. Lippolis registered three strikeouts, and only allowed four hits while on the mound.

  • The Muskies will be back in action on Saturday, April 23, when they host Otterbein of an OAC doubleheader. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. at Mose Morehead Field.
