Baseball slips vs. Heidelberg

The Muskingum baseball team fell in an OAC doubleheader versus Heidelberg on Sunday. The Muskies fell in extra innings 9-8 in game one, and dropped game two 13-7. 

The Basics

  • Records: Muskingum (11-11 Overall, 1-5 OAC), Heidelberg (11-11, 3-3 OAC)
  • Location: Mose Morehead Field

Game 1

How it Happened

  • The Muskie offense got out to a hot start, scoring two runs in the first inning to open up a 2-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by RBI singles from senior Trey Yoder and sophomore Gavin Hawk.
  • Neither team would allow a run until the sixth inning where Heidelberg tied the game off a two-run homer from Keaton Mark.
  • Heidelberg took a 3-2 lead later in the sixth off a fielder's choice RBI from Thomas Sauer.
  • However, the Muskies immediately answered back with an RBI from junior Devin Ryan, and another RBI single from Gavin Hawk to retake a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Heidelberg was able to plate two runs in the seventh, and another in the eighth inning to retake the lead.
  • Despite trailing late, the Muskie offense loaded the bases in the eighth inning and drew two RBI walks to tie the game up at six apiece. Both runs would prove to be vital as neither team scored in the ninth inning, and the game headed to extra innings.
  • The tenth and eleventh inning yielded no runs for either team. The Muskies threatened in the tenth with a runner on third and two outs, but were unable to capitalize.
  • In the top of the twelfth inning, Heidelberg's Andrew Pokley hit a solo home run to claim a 7-6 advantage.
  • However, the Muskies managed to load the bases in the twelfth and score one run off a wild pitch to tie the game back up at seven all.
  • Heidelberg recaptured the lead in the fourteenth inning off a two-run homer from Andrew Pokley to give the Student Princes a 9-7 lead.
  •  Junior Allex Santacroce blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the fourteenth inning, but the Muskies couldn't tie the game again and Heidelberg secured the 9-8 win.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Muskies were led by sophomore Gavin Hawk who finished 3-for-6 with two RBIs.
  • Senior Trey Yoder also finished 3-for-6, and he tallied three runs scored and one RBI as well.
  • Junior Allex Santacroce went 1-for-5 with two RBIs, two walks, and a run scored for Muskingum.
  • Sophomore Quinten Collins tallied one hit and two runs scored for the Muskies asso.
  • Senior Jake Norris got the start for the Muskies on the mound. Norris pitched six innings, giving up four hits and five earned runs on the day.
  • Sophomore Clark Jennings, freshman Brock Pfister, and sophomore Liam Carey all pitched in relief for the Muskies as well.
  • Ridge Clark picked up the win for Heidelberg after pitching two and one-third innings and giving up one earned run.

 

Game 2

How it Happened

  • After Heidelberg struck first with a run in the second inning, the Muskies answered right back with a fielder's choice RBI from sophomore Drew Dittoe.
  • Heidelberg picked up another run in the third off a solo home run from Keaton Marl, but the Muskies were able to tie the game again in the fifth off a sacrifice fly from sophomore Nate Keiser.
  • Heidelberg added two runs in the sixth inning, and four more in the seventh to push their lead out to 8-2.
  • Muskingum got one run back in the seventh inning off an RBI single from junior Dominic Gorence, but Heidelberg plated two more in the eighth to claim a 10-3 lead.
  • The Muskies scored three runs in the eighth inning including an RBI ground out by junior Allex Santacroce, a run scored from sophomore Gavin Hawk off a balk, and a run scored off a wild pitch from sophomore Drew Dittoe.
  • Despite Muskingum trimming the lead down to 10-6 heading into the ninth, Heidelberg was able to plate three more runs in the ninth to extend their lead back to six.
  • Muskingum scored one more run in the ninth inning, but couldn't mount a comeback as Heidelberg secured a 13-7 victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • In game two, the Muskies were led by junior Dominic Gorence who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Peyton Carr finished 2-for-2 with two singles, while junior Jake Hymrod went 1-for-1 with an RBI single.
  • Sophomore Erik Cover started game two for the Muskies on the mound. Cover gave up four earned runs in six and one-third innings pitched for the Muskies. Sophomore Noah Moser and senior Drew Eaches both made appearance in relief for the Muskies as well.
  • Brady Knizner got the win for Heidelberg after pitching seven and one-third innings and giving up two earned runs.

The Muskies will be back in action on Tuesday, April 12, when they host Marietta for an OAC doubleheader. Game on is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Mose Morehead Field.
