Baseball splits doubleheader with Ohio Northern

The Muskingum baseball team won game one of its doubleheader against Ohio Northern, 5-3. In game two, the Muskies fell 3-0.

Muskingum jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Trey Yoder was hit by a pitch, allowing sophomore Matt Stewart to come home. In their next at-bat, the Muskies added another run after Stewart hit an RBI single.

In the top of the fourth inning, Muskingum extended its lead when freshman Brett Carson hit a sacrifice bunt. Then, freshman Chayce Lundell blasted an RBI to left field to give the Muskies a 4-0 lead.

Ohio Northern retaliated in the bottom of the fifth by scoring two runs to make it 4-2.

The Polar Bears scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a one-point game (4-3). However, Stewart blasted an RBI single through the right side in the top of the ninth, allowing senior Michael Pagano to score en route to the Muskies' road victory.

Senior Evan Hinds earned the win for Muskingum on the mound. Hinds pitched 9.0 innings and allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out five batters. Pitcher Jack Schaller took the loss for Ohio Northern. Schaller pitched 3.0 innings and allowed four runs on four hits. 

Stewart led the Muskies with one run on four hits and two RBIs. Michael Rocco guided Ohio Northern with two runs on three hits and one RBI.

Muskingum and Ohio Northern were scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Polar Bears scored three runs on four hits and took advantage of one Muskie error to grab the late lead. 

Ohio Northern held the Muskies at bay over the final two frames to earn its ninth OAC victory.

Freshman Jake Norris took the loss for Muskingum. Norris pitched 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. Nate Bye earned the win for the Polar Bears. He allowed no runs on five hits in 9.0 innings of work. 

Freshman Sam Pinckert led the Muskies at the plate with three hits. Matthew Burkett guided Ohio Northern with two hits and two RBIs. 

The Muskies next travel to Denison on Monday, April 29. Start time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
