Baseball sweeps doubleheader vs. Hiram

The Muskingum baseball team won its season opening twinbill at home against Hiram on a chilly Sunday afternoon. The Muskies won the opener 5-3 and took the nightcap, 4-0.

In the opener, junior Eddie Harper and senior Austin DeVore helped power the Muskies to the win. Harper opened the game with a solo home run and added an RBI single in the eighth inning. He ended the game going 4-for-5 with two RBI's and one run scored. DeVore belted a two-run double in the fourth inning.

Senior Joe Shumar registered an RBI single to aid the Muskie effort. Muskingum ended the outing with five runs on nine hits.

Sophomore Evan Hinds tossed seven strong innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with four strikeouts. Junior Kyle Schmitgen fired the final two innings to notch the save.

Hiram (7-5) scored three runs on eight hits. Bryan Engdahl, Will Howell and Eric Martin all logged an RBI for the Terriers. Hank Clegg started and went six innings and allowed three runs on four hits. Clayton Torok took the loss after allowing one run in one inning of work.

In game two, senior Brandon Bush scattered five hits and allowed two runs over eight strong innings with 10 strikeouts to earn the win. Freshman Thomas Green closed the game to earn his first career save.

Senior Dallas Allen went 2-for-4 with a double and home run and senior Matt Lynn and Harper each added an RBI to pace the Muskies. Senior A.J. Kazmierczak went 2-for-3 with a double and sophomore Michael Pagano added a pair of hits.

Shawn May was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits in five innings.

Mike Eversole and Alex Perrella each logged an RBI in the ninth and the game ended with the Terriers having the tying run at the plate.

Muskingum (5-6) next plays at Bethany on Tuesday, March 21. Game time of the scheduled doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m.
