21st-ranked Muskingum defeats John Carroll and 22nd-ranked Wittenberg
The 21st-ranked Muskingum volleyball team recorded back-to-back victories against John Carroll and 22nd-ranked Wittenberg at the Muskingum tri-match on Saturday. The Muskies defeated John Carroll 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) and beat Wittenberg 3-1 (25-15, 25-27, 25-22, 25-12).
 
The Basics
  • The tri-match was hosted by Muskingum. 
  • With these victories, the Muskies improve to 17-2 overall with a 1-1 slate in the OAC. 
  • The John Carroll triumph marked the Muskies 12th straight-set win of the 2019 season.
  • The Muskies have defeated three ranked teams this year. 
  • Junior Brooke Fatheree earned her 1,000 career dig.
Game one 
 
vs. John Carroll 
  • As a team, Muskingum recorded 48 kills, 41 assists, and 68 digs. 
  • In set one, the Muskies registered back-to-back points to jump out to an early 12-5 lead. Muskingum tallied a 6-2 run to expand the gap to 21-12. The Muskies capitalized on a Blue Streak error to secure the set with a score of 25-16.
  • In set two, the Muskies locked in seven straight points to slide past the Blue Streaks with a score of 7-2. John Carroll retaliated with a 7-4 run to get within three-points (14-11) of the Muskies. The contest remained tight until the Muskies tallied three consecutive points to give them a five-point edge on the Blue Streaks (20-15). Muskingum secured the final two points to take the set. 
  • In set three, the Muskies and Blue Streaks traded points until Muskingum secured six unanswered points to give them a 10-5 lead. John Carroll chipped away at the deficit, but the Muskies continued to control play. A kill by Fatheree locked in the set for the Muskies with a score of 25-18.
  • Juniors Brynn Guist and Maddie McGee guided the Muskies with 12 kills each. 
  • Fatheree chipped in 11 kills on 26 attempts, with a .346 hitting percentage. 
  • Fatheree also dished out 12 digs. 
  • Junior Maddie Sikorski logged 13 digs.
  • Junior Jessica Cottle directed the Muskies with a team-high 23 digs. 
  • Freshman Emma Conrad amassed 10 digs. 
  • Junior Erin Dickson logged a game-high 31 assists. 
  • Guist and Fatheree notched four blocks each.
Game Two 
 
vs. Wittenberg 
  • As a team, Muskingum notched 52 kills, 49 assists, and 79 digs. 
  • In set one, the Muskies and Tigers fought neck and neck with neither team taking more than a two-point lead early on. Muskingum recorded three straight points to slide past Wittenberg with a score of 19-13. The Tigers fought to close the gap, but the Muskies continued to control play. Muskingum tallied six consecutive points to secure the 25-15 victory.
  • In set two, the Tigers came out hot and notched three straight points to give them a four-point edge on the Muskies (12-8). Muskingum retaliated with a 6-2 run to tie up play to 14-14. The contest remained tight until Muskingum registered five unanswered points to advance past the Tigers with a score of 22-17. Wittenberg answered back with a ferocious 7-1 run to give them a 24-23 lead over the Muskies. Muskingum fought back but the Tigers locked in the final two points to take the set.
  • The Muskies took control of set three early on with a score of 13-4. The Tigers logged four straight points to get within three points of the Muskies (21-18). Wittenberg continued to chip away at the differential, but the Muskie momentum could not be halted. A kill by Guist locked in the 25-22 triumph. 
  • In set four, the Muskies tallied an 8-1 run to give them an early 12-7 lead. Muskingum secured three consecutive points to expand the gap to 21-11. The Muskies capitalized on Tiger errors to notch the dominating 25-12 victory.
  • Fatheree led the Muskies with 21 kills on 53 attempts, with a scorching .321 hitting percentage. 
  • Fatheree also chipped in 15 digs. 
  • Guist amassed 10 kills, while McGee tallied eight. 
  • Cottle anchored the Muskie backline with 18 digs. 
  • Conrad dished out 13 digs, while Dickson logged 11.
  • Dickson controlled the Muskie offense with a game-high 42 assists.
