Volleyball secures a 4-0 record at the Carnegie Mellon Invite

The Muskingum volleyball team secures a 4-0 record at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, beating Bluffton (25-6, 25-18, 29-31, 25-12), Mary Washington (25-19, 25-18, 26-24), Kean (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-10), and Elizabethtown (25-16, 25-17, 25-20).

The Basics

  • The tournament was hosted by Carnegie Mellon.
  • Muskingum now stands 14-2 overall.
  • The Muskies will play again Tuesday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. against Denison.

Friday Action

Bluffton (25-6, 25-18, 29-31, 25-12)

  • As a team Muskingum registered 55 kills, 47 assists, and 60 digs.
  • Muskingum came out with intensity securing back to back points to take an early lead of 10-1. Bluffton attempted to close the gap, but the Muskies expanded the lead with a score of 17-6. An 8-0 run secured the victory over the Beavers.
  • In the second set, the Muskies and Beavers fought neck and neck with neither team claiming more than a four-point lead early on. With the score tied 18-18, the Muskies fought hard and registered a 7-0 run to lock in the 25-18 win.
  • The fight continued into the third set, until the Muskies captured a 19-15 lead. The Beavers answered back with a 9-4 run tying up the score 23-23. Muskingum battled hard but fell short to Bluffton with a final score of 31-29.
  • In the fourth and final set, Muskingum took control with a score of 13-8. The Muskies notched a 12-4 run to claim the set.
  • Sophomore Brooke Fatheree led the attack with 17 kills, 19.5 points, and a hitting percentage of .317.
  • Sophomore Brynn Guist added 13 kills on 29 attempts, with a hitting percentage of .310.
  • Sophomore Erin Dickson logged a team-best 36 assists.
  • The backline was anchored by sophomore Jessica Cottle who notched 16 digs.
  • Senior Jordan Youngs recorded 13 digs, while sophomore Maddie Sikorski had 11.

Mary Washington (25-19, 25-18, 26-24)

  • As a team Muskingum logged 44 kills, 40 assists, and 36 digs.
  • In set one, Muskingum secured a 9-5 lead over the Eagles. Mary Washington attempted to trim the deficit but the Muskies continued to control the play and won the set with a score of 25-19.
  • In the second set, the Muskies took an early lead of 13-8 and the Eagles struggled to fight back. A 12-10 run allowed the Muskies to capture the 25-18 victory.
  • In the third and final set, the Muskies took the lead with a score of 15-9. The Eagles answered back with a 8-2 run to tie the set 17-17. Muskingum and Mary Washington continued to fight, but the Muskies secured the final three-points to take the set.
  • Fatheree and sophomore Kaitlin Goedde both registered 10 kills.
  • Plumly and Guist added 8 kills, both with hitting percentages above .300.
  • The offensive efforts were led by Dickson who logged a team-best 36 assists.
  • Fatheree also secured 13 digs in three sets.

Kean (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-10)

  • As a team Muskingum registered 59 kills, 55 assists, and 76 digs. 
  • In set one, the Muskies and Cougars fought neck and neck with neither team claiming more than a two-point lead early on. The Muskies logged a 6-2 run to put them ahead with a score of 18-12. The Cougars answered back with six-points in a row tying up the set 18-18. The Muskies fought hard but fell short with a score of 25-23. 
  • The battle continued into the second set until Muskingum was able to slip past the Cougars with a score of 14-10. The Muskies fought hard and recorded the final two-points to take the set. 
  • In the third set, the Muskies came out hot and took an early lead of 12-8. The Cougars fought to trim the deficit, but Muskingum was able to secure the match with a victory of 25-21. 
  • In the fourth and final set, The Muskies controlled the play and registered 13 consecutive points to put them ahead of the Cougars 22-7. The Muskies secured the win with a score of 25-10. 
  • The Muskies were led by Fatheree who secured 16 kills, 21 digs, and 18 points.
  • Guist added 13 kills, while Goedde added 10.
  • Dickson controlled the offense with a team-high 38 assists. 
  • Cottle recorded a team-best 22 digs. 

Elizabethtown (25-16, 25-17, 25-20)

  • As a team Muskingum notched 47 kills, 43 assists, and 64 digs.
  • In set one, the Muskies took the lead with a score of 11-7. A 9-3 run expanded the gap to 20-10. The Blue Jays fought to trim the defecit but Muskingum scored the final four-points to take the set.
  • The Muskies and Blue Jays fought side by side in the second set until Muskingum was able to advance with a score of 11-7. The Blue Jays taillied back to back points, but Muskingum secured a 14-10 run to claim the victory. 
  • The battle continued into the third set. Muskingum secured four-points in a row to put them ahead of the Blue Jays with a score of 15-11. The Blue Jays fought back with intensity but a kill by Guist locked in the 25-20 victory for the Muskies. The win marked Muskingum's seventh straight-set victory.
  • The Muskie attack was led by Guist who logged 14 kills on 31 attempts, with a hitting percentage of .323.
  • Freshman Carson Miller added 13 kills on 19 attempts, with a hitting percentage of .632.
  • Dickson led the team with 36 assists.
  • The backline was secured by Cottle who had 17 digs, Youngs who had 13, and Sikorski who had 11.
