Volleyball uses late rally to defeat Transylvania and Mt. St. Joseph at the OAC/HCAC Challenge

The Muskingum volleyball team went 2-2 at the OAC/HCAC Crossover Challenge at Hanover College. The Muskies beat Transylvania and Mt. St. Joseph and fell against Bluffton and Hanover. Following the tournament, junior Mackenzie O'Shea was named to the all-tournament team.

Game 1 - Muskingum 0, Bluffton 3 (25-23, 25-18, 25-21)

At the Net

  • Trailing 20-15 in set one, junior Chloe Brandewie sparked a 5-1 run that forced a Bluffton timeout.
  • Senior Katie Hunt recorded two kills late in the set that pulled the Muskies within 23-24 before the Beavers were able to close out the set.
  • Bluffton would go on to claim set two 25-18 and set three 25-21.
  • The Muskies were led at the net by Brandewie with a team-high 11 kills.
  • Hunt finished with 10 kills for the Muskies.
  • The Beavers were led by Bethany Martini with nine kills.

Assisting the Attack

  • Freshman Rhieannae Cory guided the attack with 21 assists.
  • Freshman Kennedy Brown finished with 14 assists for the Muskies.
  • Bluffton was led by Erin Weisgarber with 27 assists.

Defending the Court

Game 2 - Muskingum 3, Transylvania 2 (17-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-23, 15-11)

At the Net

  • The Muskies wasted no time in set five as they jumped to a quick 5-1 advantage behind the service of Cory.
  • Brandewie led Muskingum late in the set as she recorded three crucial kills that sealed the win.
  • Muskingum finished with a team total 55 kills and 53 assists.
  • Junior Mackenzie O'Shea led the way with 13 kills, while Brandewie finished with 11 kills.
  • The Pioneers were led by Taryn Glass with 18 kills.

Assisting the Attack

  • Brown finished with a team-high 27 assists.
  • Freshman, setter, Cory finished with 22 assists.
  • Hannah Talkers posted a game-high 51 assists for Transylvania.

Defending the Court

  • Prince defended the back row for the Muskies picking-up 34 digs.
  • The Muskies finished with 80 digs as a team.

Game 3 - Muskingum 3, Mt. St. Joseph 2 (24-26, 27-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-11)

At the Net

  • Muskingum was led in the contest by Hunt with 15 kills.
  • Nestoff and sophomore Miranda Plumly recorded 11 kills.
  • The lions were led by Riley Brunner with a game-high 20 kills.
  • For the second time at the OAC/HCAC Crossover Challenge the Muskies rallied from behind to claim a five set victory.

Assisting the Attack

  • Cory guided the attack with 28 assists.
  • Brown added 27 assists for Muskingum.
  • Mt. St. Joseph was led by Lynsee Spatz with 48 assists.

Defending the Court

  • Muskingum, libero, Prince defended the court with 23 digs.

Game 4 - Muskingum 1, Hanover 3 (17-25, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25)

At the Net

  • The Muskie attack was led by O'Shea with 13 kills.
  • Hunt and Plumly both finished with 11 kills each.
  • Hanover was led by Kelsey Brandvik with 11 kills.
  • As a team, Muskingum finished with 49 kills and eight blocks.

Assisting the Attack

  • The duo of Brown and Cory finished with a combined 43 assists.
  • Haley Alexander guided the attack for the Panthers finishing with 21 assists.

Defending the Court

  • Nestoff led the defense with 18 digs, while Prince finished with 16 digs for the Muskies.
  • Monique Huynh finished with a game-high 25 digs.
