Late scoring surge propels women’s soccer to season-opening draw at W&J

The Muskingum women's soccer team scored two goals in the final seven minutes of the game to secure a 3-3 draw against Washington & Jefferson in its season-opening game on Thursday evening.

  • The contest marked the season-opener for the Muskies.

 How it happened

  • The Presidents struck first with a goal from Maddie Dittrich off an assist from Courtney Actis and Sarah Schneider in the 35th minute to take a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
  • However, Muskingum was able to tie things up in the 47th minute with a goal from freshman Britney Herrick who was assisted by freshman Hannah Ritchie.
  • W&J recaptured its lead by scoring back-to-back goals within 10 minutes of each other claiming a 3-1 edge.
  • Sophomore Morgan Meisel trimmed the Muskie deficit to 3-2 on a strike in the 83rd minute.
  • Muskingum tied the outing at three in the 86th minute when Meisel converted on a penalty kick. The PK was awarded after a foul in the box was called on the Presidents. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Washington & Jefferson ended the outing with a 15-6 edge in shots and a 5-1 nod in corner kicks.
  • Sophomore Morgan Meisel led the Muskies with a game-high four shots and two goals.
  • Freshman Britney Herrick added a strike and a goal.
  • Freshman Hannah Ritchie added a shot to round out the Muskie scoring efforts.
  • Junior Goalkeeper Kelly Buck tallied five saves in 90 minutes of work for the Muskies.
