Wrestling take downs Southern Virginia in dramatic fashion

The Muskingum wrestling team ended the Washington & Lee Duals with a dramatic 19-14 win in the final bout against Southern Virginia on Monday afternoon.

The Muskies entered the heavyweight bout against Southern Virgina trailing 14-13. Freshman Antonio Zapata lifted the Muskies to the thrilling win with a fall at the 1:32 mark against Caleb West. The win is the first of the season for the Muskies. 

Freshmen Tanner Walker, Jordan Burkholder and Toby Warrington all notched victories.

Muskingum opened the duals with a 29-11 setback against Washington & Lee. 

Burkholder registered a 19-4 tech fall against Ethan Hartmand and Zapata garnered a win by forfeit for the Muskies.

In the Muskies second match of the day, Greensboro beat Muskingum 24-18.

Burkholder, Warrington, Walker and Zapata all had wins for the Muskies. Burkholder had a 5-4 decision against Gabriel Wilson and Warrington pinned Andrew Moorefield at the 3:11 mark. Walker beat Andrew Chappell 4-0 and Zapata pinned Vincent Wilson at the 1:37 mark.

Muskingum next hosts Mount Union for its Ohio Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday, January 19. Match time is slated for 7:30 p.m. and will feature live video and audio on fightingmuskies.com.
