Women's Basketball drops a hard-fought battle to Kenyon

The Muskingum women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought battle at the buzzer to Kenyon in their 2019-20 season home opener, 64-63.

Game Highlights

In the first quarter, the Muskies and Ladies battled neck and neck with neither team gaining more than a four-point lead early on. Kenyon registered eight consecutive points to slide past Muskingum with a score of 12-4. Muskingum junior Camay Baylock retaliated with a layup with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter to get the Muskies within two-points of the Ladies (14-12). In the second quarter, Filiaggi drained a three-pointer to give the Muskies a 15-14 lead. Kenyon registered back-to-back points to secure a six-point edge on the Muskies (28-22). Katie Orefice connected a jump shot to give the Ladies a 33-23 advantage going into the break. 

In the third quarter, Matijasich collected a pair of free-throws to expand the gap to 37-25. Muskingum chipped away at the differential, but the Kenyon momentum could not be halted. Sophomore Olivia Lang drained a long ball to trim the deficit to 45-40 with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Muskingum tallied back-to-back points, and a layup by Smith tied up play to 46-46. Muskingum registered five unanswered points to secure a 51-46 lead over the Ladies. Kenyon fought back with two straight jump shots to tie up play at 56-56. Muskingum and Kenyon traded baskets with neither squad leading by more than three points. With 27 seconds left, Baylock sank a three-pointer to give the Muskies a 63-62 lead. Kenyon answered back with a layup in the waning seconds to secure the 64-63 triumph over the Muskies.
